Curry Houses

Ate in Taj Mahal in Mont Carvoeiro having been impressed with it when it first opened three years ago - Could do with spending some money on the decor but the curry was outstanding - Havent eaten a better biryani in the numerous (!) curry houses I have frequented in the UK.

1 q for anyone who knows - is the run by the same people as O Castelo as the menus are exactly the same - ran out of nights to get to O castelo and find out for myself!

Funny innit? This is the so called "MC Indian" that figures on many poor reviews on the site.

In my (humble) opinion the best Indian meals around Carvoeiro in order of preference are to be found at:

1. O Castello
2. Piano Garden - Sesmarias/Ferragudo road
3. The Indian - Estrada do Farol
4. Taj Mahal, Monte Carvoeiro

Guys, I tried this Indian and thought it was really quite bad and others have agreed. I tried the pizza restaurant Trattoria at QDP and loved it (3 times) but it has been slated. I guess we like what we like.

Spot on Biffa - but actually I would only have listed the first three.

O Castello gets our vote.... although the service can be a little slow. O Idiano is OK but is small. O Castello far better location and in my opinion the food is superior. Last we were there it was the night of thd August fireworks and we had a great meal and a first class position for the display.

On the same subject of Indain food- we like Bollywood on the beach (right near the end across from the ambulance base) in Armacao de Pera

We went to both Bollywood and O Castello following recommendations. We much preferred the latter but could not help noticing that both menus look the same and both restaurants use the same serving dishes. Is there a tie-up or does some one supply an Indian restaurant kit?

I've been to Bollywood and found that the dishes weren't spicy enough even though I'd asked for my meal to be 'hot'. Also I had a problem with the pilau rice having lots of peas, carrots and green beans in it. O Castelo is far superior. I've been to the one at Monte Carvoeiro and quite liked it. Last week I went to a Suranimese restaurant in Alvor called Faja Lobi which is worth a visit. You can order normal courses straight from the menu or you can order their rice table (Friday's and Saturday's only) where you get lots of different dishes to try, like chicken satay, beef in green curry sauce, curried pork, fried black banana, roasted glazed belly pork, and beanshoot stir-fry amongst other things. Very nice.

Have any of you ever been to the Piano Garden on the way to Ferragudo?

It's quite an interesting setting and the food was a mix of Indian and pizza (?).

I was there a few years ago and really enjoyed it but I don't even know if it's still open.

Just back from a fantastic fortnight, wall-to-wall sunshine. Having read the forum before we left, we decided to try O Castello and see if it was better than our usual haunt, O Indiano on the Estrada do Farol.

Although the location of O Castello islovely (we ate on the terrace/balcony) we did think the cooking was slightly better at O Indiano. We tried both twice, and each time, O Indiano slighty had the advantage. You wouldn't be disappointed with either, though!

If you want truly superb Indian food you should try Algarve 2000, just up behind Colina Sol near Rocha Brava (in the same parade as Bar Tropical).

The food is freshly cooked to order and the Prawn Curry is fantastic
