Scruffts 2011

Post by martin »

some early information on this years Scruffts dog show....

The Association for Protection of Animals in the Algarve are pleased to announce that the 12th Scruffts “Dog of the Year Show” has now been confirmed for Sunday September 18th 2011. The venue will be at the same place as the last show in 2010, in the pavilion at the FATACIL Showground in Lagoa, Algarve.

“We are pleased,” say APAA President Alan Camplin-Smith, “ that we have again Skinners Pet Food as our main sponsor for this years event. We also have created a facebook page “scrufftsalgarve” for those who would like to be friends of the show and follow along as we prepare for the event.”

Two classes at Scruffts 2011 have been revised this years and will allow visitors at the show to vote for their favourite mixed breed and also pedigree dog with the votes countered during the lunch break and announced before the afternoon judging period. In addition a new class has also been created for “Young Handler and Dog Look-alike” which will allow for children to show their handling skills and ability to create a memorable impression with their dog.

More details of the show will be released shortly. Any firms interested in sponsoring any of the judging classes or wanting a trade stand please contact

more information

The Show, which is now in its 12th year, funds APAA’s charitable efforts: the proceeds from Scruffts provide treatment and food for abandoned dogs across the Algarve, and give help to those who help the animals—including spaying and neutering and emergency veterinary treatment. The Show is a light-hearted family event, providing an opportunity for owners to show their cross breed or pedigree dog which could become the Scruffts “Dog of the Year”. Last year the Show was attended by hundreds of adults and children and is an ideal way to increase market awareness and promote your business to a wide variety of people in the Algarve—at the same time helping the cause of abandoned animals. But Scruffts is not just a judging show; it is also a celebration of the work carried out by all animal charities. Please help us this year either by sponsoring one of the many judging classes or having a trade stand or space.

Trade stands are available for €10 for the first square metre (space only) and €5 for each subsequent square metre. There are limited numbers of covered cubicles available—3 x 3 metres which are dependent on location either €25 or €50 each.

Sponsorship is €80 and is available for the judging classes listed below (with the exception of Classes 19 and 20 which are reserved for the main sponsor).

The judging classes are as follows:

1. Best Pup (Mixed Breed)
2. Best Pup (Pedigree)
3. Best Veteran (Mixed Breed)
4. Best Veteran (Pedigree)
5. Best 6 Legs (Mixed Breed)
6. Waggiest Tail (Mixed Breed)
7. Best Male (Pedigree)
8. Most Handsome Dog (Mixed Breed)
9. People’s Favourite Dog (Mixed Breed) (new for 2011)
10. People’s Favourite Dog (Pedigree) (new for 2011)
11. Dog & Young Handler Look alike (new for 2011)
12. Happiest Rescue Dog (Mixed Breed)
13. Best Female (Pedigree)
14. Prettiest Bitch (Mixed Breed)
15. Most Appealing Eyes (Mixed Breed)
16. Most Appealing Eyes (Pedigree)
17. Best Condition (Mixed Breed)
18. Best Condition (Pedigree)
19. Scruffts—Best in Show (Pedigree)
20. Scruffts—Best in Show (Mixed Breed)

A cup will be presented to the winner of each class-

We are delighted that Skinner’s Pet Foods, based in Eye in Suffolk, will again be the Main Sponsor. Skinner’s use only the finest natural ingredients in their complete dry dog foods which are free from artificial additives, flavourings and preservatives. Skinner’s produce foods to suit dogs of all ages, breeds and activity levels.

We are also delighted that this year The Fat Pig Company will be at the Show to complement the catering offer which, as usual, will include Ania’s Smörgåstårtor and a smaller APAA catering unit.

We are including a craft fair within the Show and hope to have some entertainment during the lunchtime break.

A full programme for the Show is now being discussed and further details will be provided as and when they are finalised.
