WALK MONDAY 12 DECEMBER - FIGUERA ESTUARY
Russell and Linda have found a brand new walk from Figuera. The walk is mostly flat but there is some off piste on uneven ground and a scramble on a slight incline. Walk approx. 9kms, 2 1/2 hours, grade 2. Bring binoculars if you have them, Flamingos, Heron, sand pipers and other birds with feathers! The only hazard could be cows! Meeting point: Figueras Café Sociedad. Directions: Drive West along the N125 towards Lagos, pass Pestana Golf on the left. Approximately 1km further along take the 2nd right turning to Figuera, just after driving under the footpath. Park on the left just after the Cafe Sociedad. Meeting time: 10am. The café Tic Tac nearby does a very good lunch for 10 euros, soup, meat or fish, wine, water and coffee for anyone wishing to join us. Usual Geoff rules, wear suitable footwear, walk at your own risk. We will have to cancel the walk if there is heavy rain as the ground will be too slippery and muddy. Please add your name below if you wish to join us.

Be with you all in spirit, for what looks like the last walk of the season ( even though there is another next week)

Linda has sent me the following , just to make me even greener....
" Sorry to say it was an amazing day and Russ is really rubbing it in:
On a perfect Portuguese winter morning, clear blue skies, the sun beating down radiating heat to 23C, 12 very happy people set off on what has been described by all as "the best walk of the year".
Although not the walk advertised (this was due to 200 cows turning the original walk into a mud bath). We all drove a further 1km to Mexilhora Grande station. We walked through the idyllic countryside down to the salt pans and river estuary which was teaming with wildlife, flamingos, wagtails and herons amongst the thousands of birds we saw. The sun reflecting off the sea like a mirror, a twinkling and shimmering paradise.
After many photo and binocular stops and 2 1/2 hours later we arrived at the Tic Tac restaurant for lunch. Linda having negotiated an extremely good price for a set meal with wine and water for 10 euros. Home made soup, pork with roast potatoes and pickles or fried fish with rice. A very attentive owner/waiter, who even used his flame thrower to crisp to the top of the crème caramels. After well over 2 hours it was agreed this was one of the best lunches ever and we were all sorry that Geoff and Sue had missed it.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year - may we all enjoy this beautiful paradise for many years to come.
Linda and Russell (the sunshine kids)"
.... list of walkers:
Helen, Nigel, Ray, Chris, Mary M , Paddy, Sue, Steve, Remington, Geraldine, Linda and Russell. Plus a very large and friendly local dog that joined us.
PS = every word of the report is true"
Photos to follow tomorrow...
