On the subject of wine, perhaps someone can give me recommendations on Portugese wine. Its only recently that our local sainsbury's has started stocking decent bottles, but I would love to know what to choose in
CVO, I prefer red. (recently tried Cliff's wine, but was instantly transformed into a blue-rinsed teeny bopper) only joking

So come on, what is everybodies favourite?

Do Sainsburys do "Segada"? That is not too bad at all.

Try and find Esporão - sometimes cheaper in UK than in Portugal but pricey anyway. The white is not so dear and luvverly.

Try any of the Alentejo wines, they have been through a revolution lately and many are very good.

I'm just about to down my usual plonk!

Yes Biffa, Sainsbury's do the one that you mentioned and we have tried it.

Tricky...remember .all i once knew of Portuguese wine was 'Mateus'!
But on living there..tasted lots of local stuff and enjoyed most. Had an 'offy'/wine shop at back of our Lagoa apartment(its still there!) and they did really nice local stuff.
We liked the local Algoz white which we bought in carafes--really good and quite potent!
Had good rose wine at 'Romas' with meals..waitor wrote it down for me..'Vinho Rose Defesa'...nice mm.
But for 'reds' I always have French..even in Algarve..if I can get it... who in my mind,make the best!

Borba - a good honest and nice price Alentejo wine. I really like the white as an everyday wine. We could go on all night but Monte Velho red is good for the money.

For a nice red try Marques de Borba.

Borba and Marquês de Borba are both sound advice. Borba also sells a "Rótulo de Cortiça" red, which is composed of the higher grade grapes and usually aged a few years.

Quinta do Carmo red/white represent the best portuguese produce combined with the production quality and experience of the Rotschild dynasty. A bit more pricey, but well worth it.

Another favourite of mine is Montes Claros, a superbly rounded red which goes down very well with the Lobinhos de Porco at the Sulmar restaurant near Benagil.

(gawd, 10:30 and I am absolutely starving now)

OK - I was the "Guest" who started this topic and now I hope we are all much more aware after downing significant quantities of alcohol before our complimentary drinks are presented....and taking notice of how they are served

I am also now the proud owner of a long list of wines that I shall be scouring my specialist wine merchant for and no doubt puffing and blowing at the prices

. Get me back to Portugal
