Are cigarettes cheaper in Gibralter or Spain?
Are cigarettes cheaper in Gibralter or Spain?
Hi all,
Apologies for being a smoker but does anyone know if cigarettes are cheaper in Spain or even Gibralter?
If so has anyone taken the trip to Gibralter and if so how long did it take.
Grateful for any advice

Fags in Gib are really cheap but your only allowed to bring out 200 each. We went on a day trip when we were staying in Costa del sol. Cant say how long it takes from CVO but i'm sure they do day trips.
Why apologies for being a smoker, I dont!

Cigs are approx 40 cents/20 cheaper in Spain than here in Portugal, but if you are going by car you need to buy at least 2000 to cover the cost of the fuel for the trip, and that's only going as far as Ayamonte on the Portuguese Spanish border.
Also if you are using a rental car you will have to pay extra charges when booking, to be able to take the car into Spain, so in real terms not worth the trip.

Economy car hire don't charge extra to take a car across the border.

Last time I went to Marbella it took about 5 hours and change driving only motorway via Malaga.
It may be quicker to get to Gib. if you go via Cadiz, but you need a lot of ciggies to make up for the travel cost and you will need to smoke at least half of them to calm your nerves when driving portuguese plates through Spain.

We purchase not for ourselves but for friends back in the UK. So if there is a cheaper source than CVO it would be helpful for us too. A trip using public transport would be an adventure plus a godie bag for friends

Be carefull the law states that duty paid purchases such as cigarettes are for " Personal " consumption only.
If you do get picked up at customes the onus is on you to prove that they are for you only.
If they think that the amount you are bringing in is too high then not only will they be confiscated but you risk a fine as well.
Faro airport limits the amount you can buy partly for this reason.

How many is too many? I know someone who gets through perhaps 50 to 60 a day, therefore, a month's supply is between 1500 and 1800! In my opinion 1 is too many, but I think others might not agree with that!EMM wrote:baggysallyjane wrote:...If they think that the amount you are bringing in is too high then not only will they be confiscated but you risk a fine as well ...
