Property insurance

Post by barao »

My property and car insurance are coming up for renewal, I am interested in what companies other people use in Carvoeiro/Portugal.

I had a problem getting cover as my property is over a restaurant and bar. I am now insured though Insurance for Homes Abroad (underwritten by Lloyds). 2 bedroom, 2 bathroom apartment, £274 a year for buildings and contents insurance.

Try schofields or Hiscox - both gave me quotes of under 300 for a 4 bed villa + pool

Hiscox give really wide cover and have an excellent reputation in the trade. I should know i have been a Lloyds Underwriter myself for over 30 years !

Please could you let me have contact details for these companies, as I would be interested in getting quotes?

Medal offered Hiscox this year under the AFPOP scheme as an alternative to Victoria. I changed because the cover was better.

I have been told by our management company that 'civil responsibility' must be included in our insurance policy. The UK insurers that I have spoken to, even the ones specialising in Portugal, have never heard of this stipulation, but do include public and 3rd party liability in their cover. I'm assuming that this is the same as 'civil responsibility', but can anyone confirm please?

Sometimes yes, sometimes no. You need to request it and it usually has a separate deductible.

That's less than half what I pay to a Portuguese insurer. Maybe I'm being done???

I finally ended up with Victoria using Jim Player in Almancil - by far the lowest price for both car and house - beat my previous favourites of abbeygate easily.
Beware Earthquake cover! very expensive!. 3rd party liability is covered by law.

Went on line to get a quote from Hiscox. £750 a year for my villa without a lot of the additional cover provided by my Portuguese Insurer like Storm Damage, Earthquake cover etc etc.

I guess you had a much lower sum insured????
