getting around without a car
getting around without a car
We are planning to spend a month in Carvoeiro next Jan and do not plan to rent a car. We are happy to walk about getting our groceries and wine and such, but will want to make day trips to other interesting towns/villages. Can we do this by bus or train? We are also thinking about buying textiles for our gift shop in Canada and may want to explore some of those possibilities. All in all, if one is happy to read a lot, go out for some good local meals, drink moderately (don't care for the gin at noon experience), will we be bored for a month in your fine village? In Canada we live in a village but are busy innkeepers while we are here so we know what it is like to live in a touristy place...let us know what you think???? Or this there another place on the Algarve you would recommend? thanks

nope Carvoeiro is the best place to be. Arm yourself with a good guide (or an internet connection and a pair of walking boots) and there are gazillions of things to do....
there was a thread about cool things to do in Carvoeiro and one of the best is to just walk the cliffs (with caution) and sit down and have a sundowner. You may still be able to listen to some live music if it takes your fancy or just read the paper in the square.
oh for the internet connection look around here (carvoeiro.com - things to do and the forum) or many other sites dedicating themselves to the Algarve.
Have fun!

Getting aound without car
As a fellow Canadian I would recommend you consider booking a car for a few days of your month trip. If you are planning to look around for various items to bring back with you, a car is a handy item. There are a number of smaller villages and areas you may want to try and taking the public transit is okay but a car is much more convenient. We have visited the area for the past 7 years and would not be without a car and even though you have seen in the forum about the terrible Portugal drivers .. they are not as bad as driving around Toronto for a day. Recommend you consider a car for at least two weeks of your four. You will have a great time.
As another Canadian I agree with BK. With a car you can explore more places and the drivers are reallynot bad. It may be, because the winter is the off-season, or that we usually are not out and about in the car at night. It seems the family out for a Sunday drive would be the worst hazard. Enjoy your stay. I can't wait for Jan. when we will be in Carvoeiro for 3 glorious months. Yeah.
