There is no arguement, raising money is part of the reasoning.
Which is why we just have to make sure our paperwork is correct.
Drug couriers, drunk drivers ,those with no insurance , Mot etc, stolen cars, overstaying UK reg vehicles etc are the ones in real trouble.
Not on the same scale we do get these occaisional random checks in the UK.
There are parts of Bristol notorious for checks looking for untaxed, uninsured etc etc.
Unlike Portugal violaters do not just get fined, some of them lose their vehicles on the spot.

Hartcliffe, Knowe west, Southmead.
I play golf with a Bristol police sargeant who is part of the team that focus on car crime.
They are on first name terms with many of their regulars.
In Weston their are sopt checks when the kd in their souped up cars descend in numbers.

I brought my UK registered car over here in 2007 and began the matriculation process within 6 months of coming here. I did this because I wanted to drive legally as I would do anywhere else. I am going to have a rant now!!.

I did all this myself with numerous visits to the Alfandega in Portimao, the IMT in Faro and the vehicle inspection IPO, throughout the process there were many inconsistencies from these various departments. They obviously never communicate with each other, I will not bore you with the details but suffice to say It cost me!!.

On visiting the financas to tax my car earlier this month, I asked the guy when it will ever go down (145 euros this year)to which he replied, "never" I asked him if it was because my car was originally registered in the UK and he said "yes". Once again penalised for the doing the right thing.

RANT OVER :x

I pay exactly the same for my car, which is matriculated from UK, as the locals do for their equivalent vehicles.

145 euros road tax or ONLY £120 for a car that must be at least 6 years old or more.

Think your self lucky that you are in Portugal.

My friend was told that they brought this new rule in around 2003 which is why some of you on here y pay the same road tax as for a Portuguese registered car.

The annual road tax for my car, in the UK, would be £30.00 per year so not sure where you've got that price from, I checked on the DVLA website.

The road tax on matriculated UK vehicles is now based as if they were NEW on the date of matriculation .
So if you have a vehicle with high emmissions you will get stung.
Same in the UK now, we have a much loved low mileage MGF which costs us £200+ year to tax but will stay in the UK because we know it will probably cost a lot more in Portugal.
We have a friend who imported a large people carrier and is paying over 700euros/year.

The amount of road tax paid is dependent on when the car was matriculated/registered on Portuguese plates. If the can is registered prior to July 2007 then the car is a lot lower than the same car registered after this date. Emmissions also play a part.

Yes, I understand all of the above as previously stated I am aware of the changes in law over here regarding the tax changes . However, my car is a small one with 1.4 engine, registered in 2004 in the UK with low emissions, still £ 30.00 per annum in the UK as opposed to the € 145 here, as per my original rant!!! so sorry but no amount of arguments will convince me that this is right

Sorry to disagree Bruce but I agree newer cars with low CO2 emmissions do qualify for the low road tax in the UK.
I must admit that I was not aware that any vehicles built in 2004 qualified as my 2007 peugeot does not but the later models with the same size engine but newer design do.
