Hello folks: We are thinking of renting a place for a month next January. We like to read, want to watch some good european films, eat well, drink decent wine and sit in the sun in the cafe and work on a couple of writing projects. How will Carvoeiro measure up compared to, say, the Costa del Sol or such. We're Canadian so we're easy to please as long as the sun shines in January. thanks Johanna....

Hey Johanna,

the Algarve in January is a great place to get creative inspiration.
Peacefull towns, green landscapes, empty beaches and vast amounts of fresh air.
Sunshine...statistically you should get some, but there have been years when it rained for a couple of months non-stop - but I guess that is a risk wherever you go in the northern hemisphere in January though...

Although the local gastronomy will be partially closed for holidays you should still be able to find some great places to eat and drink.

Overall, I would say January is a better choice than say November.

As a fellow Canadian I would recommend later in January if you fits your time scale. We usually go from early February to March .. always renting a car ... and the weather has been great .. always remembering that a little rain must fall. Those rain days are great for doing things inside. There are lots of excellent restaurants open .. and though I find Carvoeiro a great place to visit on my freguent driving tours .. we have found Albufeira better as our centre of operations with a greater selection of accomodations. For all of you Carvoeira lovers .. I know Albufeira is too touristy for many of you but we enjoy it and we also enjoy visiting Carvoeiro and having lunch or dinner down by the beach. Charm is always in the eye of the looker .. You will have a great time in the Algarve, the people are friendly, the food is great and we found the Costa was not our cup of tea. Portugal much more relaxing. See you there in Feb/March. BK
