Lisbon/Faro car hire

Post by Lesley Jean »

Hello, we are flying into Lisbon at the end of this month, staying with friends and then driving down to the Algarve, we want to collect a hire car from Lisbon and drop off at Faro, has anyone done this before? we did once years ago and it worked OK, just wondered if there was a hire company that you could recommend.

We also did this a few years ago. Obviously you need to use a company with bases in both Lisbon and Faro. We used Avis which was fine, but a bit expensive.
Just checked with the ECH website using dates of 25/1 pick up at Lisbon airport and drop off at Faro on 31/1. They have three companies, Rentauto, Rent4Less and Hertz. The prices quoted started at £50, but as an example a reasonably roomy smallish car was £62 for a Fiesta or £67 for a Punto diesel. I haven't looked at Avis but I suspect their price will be far higher. Our last 30+ hires in Portugal have been through ECH and we have never had a problem.

We did this last year, booked Rentauto through ECH. We got a brand new corsa as our hire car. No problems at all.

Reminds me why I stopped using Avis. Same hire £162.02 for the cheapest car, a Mitsubishi Colt. They could have knocked the odd 2p off! That seems to add insult to injury!

We looked at this and whilst the car hire element was reasonable, there was a charge for dropping off at a different airport of 100 euros. Is this still the case?

It appears that with ECH a one way rental of 4 days or less attracts a 70 Euro charge. No charge if 5 days or more. Please correct me if I have misread this.

If you rented for 5, and left it back after 4..... ?

I would go with YOR car hire but they put a huge premium on the return to Faro and not Lisbon. ECH - I am obviously being stupid here who is this??

Thanks for the help so far :)

Economy Car Hire (economycarhire.com) are based in Dereham and use local reputable hire companies throughout Europe and further afield. I have used them for 5 or 6 hires a year for several years now without any problems. Their banner advert often appears on this site.

Doh ..... of cause it is ...... thank you DaveK ...... I have had a quick look and they are definitely cheaper, as long as it is a good hire company they use I might just book through them. Thanks again. :)

We too will be looking at ECH for our next trip because despite Steens best efforts YOR will not cancel their 20euros out of hours charge.
Admit a little nervous of using the unknown.

Forgot to say, if you create an account with ECH you can log in to see the car hire companies offering each vehicle type. For Faro airport we tend to stick to TravelRent. Always good, friendly, laid back service.

LJ, Easygo now do car hire from both Lisbon and Faro, maybe worth contacting them.

Has there been a change of policy at ECH? Folks on here have said that once you have used them or set up an account with them you get to see the various firms they represent and choose accordingly. I went on their site for the first time yesterday and the various hire companies they represent plus their prices, are listed there and you can click on the one you prefer to rent from.
