Well, I didn’t see it because I cant get beeb 2 - only bbc prime and bbc world - on my tele here in Lisbon. But I know the kind of prog and I know how easily they can distort the image of a place like Quarteira. Brian, I’m with you; I know the town well and it’s a good place, and I too see it primarily as a town where the Portuguese buy a mid-price holiday home. Sure there are restaurants and bars along the seafront catering for the Brits on a budget, most of whom have walked from their five star hotel in Vilamoura where they got half board at “half price”. In fact Vilamoura with its golf courses, big villas and big yachts in the marina is merely a suburb of Quarteira.

Ellie, if you want to see a genuine fish market or even buy a fish black market in the street against EU regulations from a genuine fisherman: check it out.

Gerry, you chose the wrong week to visit Hotel Paradiseo. When I last looked in the place was jumpin with OAP Scousers jiving to “Do you know the way to San Jose”, drinking cocktails. Saw them next morning playing boules on the beach with coloured plastic balls supplied by the holiday rep to kill time whilst waiting for a bus to take them on a mystery tour. That was mid winter too; the only time they can afford Algarve I suppose.

They were there last week as well, playing boules on the beach opposite the Dom Jose - I hope I am as lively as they were when I retire

I fully agreed with the translated document where it said 'vagueness doctrine that locks up'. It's something that everyone should be concerned about I feel.

I watched the programme and admired the family. Brave thing to do particularly as they seemed to have almost no savings.

I don't understand why so many people are so unadventurous about food. Seems to me to be half the fun of going abroad. I suppose it is a result of upbringing. We have a pretty varied diet and the children (11 and 14) happily eat anything on holiday.

Just read your post of yesterday----are you trying to get me arrested---dealing in "black market" fish--whatever next?(Psst! where do I buy them? )Mind you -Id want someone to cook them for me--as I like to be "waited on"! Know anyone whos a good cook?

No -seriously--think we may all have been a bit hasty in judging Quarteira.Both you and Brian know the place well and along with Gerrys comments --youve certainly made me curious and want to visit. Seems like folk enjoy their time there--and although Ive only ever played traditional boules in France--I wouldnt mind having a go with the plastic ones!
Just to add--I second Peters words and wish that people were a little more adventurous with food--take advantage of all that lovely fresh/reasonably cheap food there---coupled with the hot weather--playing boules--we could all end up with "dream" figures

I visited Q in 1990, stayed long enough to "decide" it was a rather awful 1960's testamony to poor taste, having said that - watched the programme last week with interest and curiosity and saw absolutely nothing to change my probably hasty (and undoubtedly incorrect as someone is going to refute me I know!) judgement - had Q or VM with it's articificial landscape been my first experience of the Algarve I would never have come back!
