The best thing people can do is to try and cut down on unnecessary car journeys NOT buy more petrol which pollutes the atmosphere - not to mention all the extra cheap flights people want these days - it all comes at a cost and its not the environment which is benefitting. More cars - more roads, less trees, all because of a lazy, greedy, selfish attitude.
Do BP really care about the environment? - don't think so. They are in business to make a profit - trees for coupons is an insult! Who is paying for the trees? - certainly not BP - its you!

Of course youre correct Red in all you say--and in the end it is we who fund it.But folk here are just trying to do some good and help put back life --living things/trees --into an area thats been absolutely devastated.
But we should try to use our cars less--youre spot on with that--we've recently bought bikes(although here in Lincs ,where the driving is abominable-we take our life in our hands!) and I walk whenever possible bothe here and in Algarve.
So on this point--I support you wholeheartedly---but at the same time--lets get those trees planted.

at the end of the day..its better to give the accumulated points for replanting trees than using the points for some silly kitchen gadget
i know bp arent doing this of of love..but isnt this offer better than nothing
i have exchanged points for 9 trees...when i go past the bp station next time ill use up my remaining points

And I agree wholeheartedly with you Ellie! Of course planting trees is doing our bit for the environment BUT what happens next year?
Wasn't it only the other month when the fires started again - Surely time and effort should be spent on making sure that Portugal has a properly supported and funded Fire Fighting Service.
Where have the funds gone that the Portuguese Govt. rec'd from the EU?
Funds that the UK never get because UK abide by EU rules that other member states choose to ignore as usual.

I cannot fault anything youve said here Red.You have put the case clearly and succinctly--every word is the truth.
You know well of my feelings towards the Bombeiros situation and I wish to God something was being done to make their lives more secure and risk-free.
Its so good to read your words that are set down,not only with pure simple logic (stating the only real answer to the situation) but with passion.
I share your passion.When we visited Lagoas Bombeiros we spoke with the Subofficer there--she had excellent English--the Sub "runs" the station,as they do in UK--and although H rose to A.D.O in L.F.B-it was always his favourite rank(sub). Of course,like many others we made contribution to families of the dead men.But this wouldnt have to be if the men were paid properly,had decent provisions for widows and orphans--"trained" properly,we saw nice new appliances there-but H doubted whether they got more than an hour a weeks training.The sub told us they "hadnt" gone to any of the fires--can you believe it
She said it was just the "local volunteers" of the villages round Monchique that had attended them!
That money from EU --where has it gone--apparently they bought 4 helicopters but only 1 was used!
Im still deeply suspicious that woodland fires were deliberatelt left to burn for land clearance.As Martin has told us,there are plans to build at least 1000 new villas and two new golf courses.
Yes ,youre right that nature can come back and life will spring anew--but what is the point if its going to happen again and again without a professional fire service to combat it.
But being a gardener by profession I hope you understand that I also feel passionately about trees and plants and Id do anything to help get the area planted-up--think of all the wild life lost as well!

well i agree with red..it is disgusting that so much money has come here and where oh where has it gone??
but there is little we can do about it im afraid....trying to get anything done here is like trying to move a steamroller with one finger.
all i can do is give my points to a bp garage...perhaps if anyone knows those highups in GALP maybe they could run a scheme for the fire service.

Ive just read the article and must admit that I had a very mixed reaction---loving the English countryside as I do--I suppose Ive always favoured our native broad-leaf species--and when I see "Thomas Hardy" quoted (one of my fav.authors)Im sentimentally swayed---but i also feel very upset at the thought of so many trees spine/spruce/cedar being felled--even though,during my years of Horticulture studies (and this included a short course on forestry management)I have to be realistic and know full well that these areas have to be managed properly to make sure certain species survive and sometimes drastic measures need to be taken.
When i read that it will also help flowers like bluebells and primroses--i think--well maybe thats a good reason too---but--and its a big but---i think-cant there be another way?I suppose the answer is --no.Im glad I didnt have to make the decision
Martin--maybe you could start the petition off(Reds suggestion--for money to be spent on professional bombeiros)--can we nominate you chairman?

I think there would be no incentive for some developer to actually start a fire in the Algarve for as you might or might not know nothing can actually be built on a site for 10 years where there was a fire, thinking being to stop some potential developer from doing this act (which I question as trees are kind of nice on a developement).

Digby-----I dont know for certain--but can you quote me the European legislation on this. Hub thinks this isnt the case--that when areas are burnt they can then be bulldozed --the land turned over to be rid of any saplings and root growth before it is built on?
Are all the lovely new roads just a coincidence as well?
I think Martin also alluded to the fact--that farmers may have started some fires in order to sell their land to developers.
But I really like to know if that rule(no building on burnt land for 10 years) is in existence.
Would you place a bet--on how long it will be before this land is built on?

You really do try hard with the road allusion
Its 10 years, no build, once an area has been burned. This is not second-third-fourth-fifth-sixth-etc.-hand information.
Also it would be seriously unwarranted to bulldoze up stumps (and roots) in they at least offer some sort of erosion control until new vegetation regenerates.

And I do know a little about soil erosion and how roots of trees help to hold it in place--when I drove through the Monchique area (going from Mexilhoeira Grande) I was mortified by the devastation and looking at the steep sides above the roads you just prayed that the soil would be held-for when the "mosoon" weather begins!
Id still like legislative evidence on the "no build"--Im making a few calls tomorrow to find answer--If Im wrong---Ill eat my hat
