lucozade or substitute

Hello there

Coming out to CVO this summer and making the usual plans etc. Can't wait especially as we couldn't make it last year. One of our party is a diabetic. Anyone with experience of diabetes will know it's essential to carry some form of sugar with them, even more so in hot weather. With the weight restrictions imposed with airlines, and liquid not allowed in hand luggage, (every one of us in our party used to pack a bottle of lucozade in their suitcase so there was plenty in case of emergency!)Is there any form of sugary drinks or formulas available to buy out in CVO? Here in UK we would buy bottles of lucozade. What do diabetics in Portugal buy as an equivalent?

We have found lucozade in the Intermarche in previous years, but very few bottles and not always in stock so can't rely on that.

Would appreciate any info if possible

Errrrrr loads of drinks for you to use...personally I buy anything, be it OJ Coke,Sprite,Fanta etc etc etc etc etc.......not a problem so don't fret,when I travel now I carry haribo sweets...job's a good un.

Errrr....the member of the party is me! Being a diabetic for 24 years, i have always relied on and trusted in lucozade if i was to become 'hypo'. Never thought about Haribo sweets which are obviously much lighter to carry than a bottle of sugary fizzy. So in your opinion, coke and Haribo is just as fast acting and effective as lucozade if needed?

By the way is Haribo available in CVO?

Hi, i would have thought that RED BULL and MOTHER would do the job no problem. RED BULL being the most available.
These are just modern lucozade ( but dont let the kids know )

Hi jojo, I know someone with diabetes who carries glucose tablets, I think they are lucozade glucose tablets which you can buy in Boots the chemist. I believe they come in different flavours and no liquid needed to wash them down, ideal while travelling.

Without wishing to sound too harsh here, but surely if you have had diabetes for 24 years you must be aware of how to control it. My wife is insulin dependent and flies extensively. She carries glucose tablets as a precaution but never drinks lucozade or any sugary drinks. Lucozade glucose tablets are readily available. A total of what... six or seven hours total travelling time from The UK to Portugal and your diabetes should be well under control.

To be fair to jojo, lamby, you can be a well managed diabetic but still have hypos.

My colleague, who is also a diabetic for 20+ years, always carries Lucozade glucose tablets with her wherever she goes. She has had a number of hypos recently and they have been a godsend! They are pretty easy to pick up from pharmacies and supermarkets in the UK though I am not sure about in Portugal!

The problem is that many people that have been diabetic for 20 plus year are ill schooled on how to treat hypos....they said to take chocolate till not that long ago but the fact is that it can take 45 minutes to work through!!

A small fun size can of coke/fanta etc or a handful of sugary sweets do me backed up by something with Carbs to stop it diving back down again so anything like a couple of digestives,a banana etc does the trick for me...best of luck with it but I am sure you will get on just fine.

Wow! thanks for your replies. Most helpful. I don't often get hypos, but when I do I use lucozade simply because i find it the fastest acting. Being well controlled, I find the first day or two in a hot climate brings a hypo on until I adjust insulin dose etc., and really wanted to know easy to carry things that are available in CVO.

Will try out the Haribos or lucozade tablets if I need to before our hols see if they work quick enough for me

My diabetic friend always has a can of Redbull in her bag, the cans are very small & she says it's easier for someone else to administer a liquid should the need arise than to put tablets or sweets into the diabetics mouth which could cause choking.
