Car Tax
Car Tax
The system was to be changed for this year. Rather than everyone renewing in May/June; tax was to become due from the month of registration with reminders sent out. I know that there were glitches at the start of the year. Does anyone know if the system is now working?

They are not writing to remind people! You have to log on the Financas website and look for it. Seem to think it was I.U Vehiculos or something similar. It´s not too difficult to find it, but just make sure you print the form and try to pay at the financas in Lagoa, so you get the receipt. Then keep it in the glove box, as they still haven´t sent the tax cards to people who paid at the start of the year and i´ve heard of people being fined for not proving that they paid! You now need to tax the vehicle on the month it was registered. If you look on the number plate it is the lower of the numbers in the yellow box.
Good luck

Tax is due in the month of matriculation of the vehicle which in the case of an imported car may not be the same as the month of first registration. I tried to tax my car in February since this is the month on my number plates and the month that the IPO is due but the internet system would no let me do it. When I visited the Financas at Lagoa with my documents and tried to payI was told that the tax was due in the month when the car was matriculated in Portugal ie May and could not be taxed before April.

excerpt from Sovereign newsletter says: "Car road tax has changed. It is now called Imposto Único de Circulação and rather than being paid in May/June each year, payment is due in the month coinciding with the
date of the first registration of the vehicle, as stated in the vehicle registration document (green book). It can be paid at the local tax
department. You will no longer receive a stamp to be displayed on the windscreen but rather you must keep the payment receipt with your car documents."

I think you will find that there is no paper to display on the windscreen any more, just a paper to keep with your documents.
Now sorted on line. Print off the pop up window that contains the 15 digit payment code and you can then use either the Multibanco or online payment. Apparently the Multibanco slip or printed payment details from on line are sufficient proof. I suspect April renewers have the short straw if they have to go to the Financas and queue with everyone paying their property charges

hi, we are hoping to relocate to the Algarve next year, can anyone give us an idea of what we can expect the road tax for a Mercedes E Class 280 deisel would be? Also any guidance on what amount of council tax we could expect to pay on a 2 or 3 bed villa? Thanks in advance for your help. Katie b

Having just brought our car over from the UK - we have been given different advise from different sources. So - what is it? We have insured our car already in Portugal - however our UK car tax and MOT run out in August - so what do we do. Is it cheaper to get Portuguese plates for the car and then do it or can we tax and MOT it with English plates - and what costs are we talking about for either way -any help would be greatly appreciated -thanks
