pool heating

After just returning home from Portugal we are thinking of heating our pool as we certainly do not use as much as we should.
Does anyone have any idea of installation and running costs for a 9 x 5 pool.
Our pool man has suggested we phone him a couple of days before we arrive and he will switch the system on and control with thermostat.

We would use for approx 8 weeks pa - and during the time we are not there the system would be off.

Our man has quoted approx 6000 euros which seems expensive.

Any advice/comments would be appreciated.

Are you sure he said 6000 (£4800.00) and not 600. Full 24/7 heating on our pool is about £90 and over night heating (cheaper) has been approx £45 for the last 5 weeks and charged to our clients at cost locally. The pool temp with cover on at night has been between 24 and 26c

We had a system put in last year the quotations ranged from 6,000 - 7,500 euros with VAT. I am not sure on running costs yet.

I might be showing my ignorance now - but is it possible to use solar energy to at least take the chill off the pool? The solar heated bath/shower water is bloody hot enough to scald if not mixed with cold water, so surely it would assist in warming up the swimming pool.

You would need about 20 largish panels and somewhere to put them. There's a thread on this somewhere but not sure where.

I gave up on that one when someone in a previous thread likened heating your pool to just chucking 50 euro notes in the water!

Is there a cheap rate at night, an off peak deal or do you have to arrange that with the authorities ? I'd love to know

We have a cheap rate overnight Pato and that's on ADM. I think it's something to do with the meter they install. We are both on ADM, who is your house manager, they can arrange it, or it might be there already. Really can't wait to meet you, when are you out next?

You only get the cheaper rate if they read the meter between midnight and 5.30am

Hi Milo,
We have just returned from Cvo; where we enjoyed for the first time, our newly heated pool.
After asking on Cvo.com, we elected for fitting a heat exchange pump, which we ended up buying in the UK. We shippied out with Algarve Removals (top marks for them). The fitting was done by Mr Cool; whom really seems to know his job.
It is a great success, makes a pretty but useless feature (the pool), usable.
Not yet worked out the running costs.
Total costs inclucing fitting and freight e 5,000.

I'm not at all technically minded but I was advised to purchase a heat exchange system, I bought it locally and I think the bill came to 5,000 euros, it seems to work fine, I can't though fathom out the charges, all my elecy bills are estimated and when I do eventually receive the statement it shows massive increases in months when the villa was empty, you know the graph they attach to the bill, often wondered if that's when they actually read the meter or if someones running a business when I'm away?

Hi Mike, well I'm definately out in early September for three weeks, I may manage something earlier but it's difficult with having a working Judy. Anna Rose from Silves manages the villa, I'll look forward to seeing you. I'm so pleased the Cafe is operational again, even though it's a restaurant, I've had some wonderful evenings there with former residents Eddie and Jean Thomas and their relatives, just simply sitting outside having a pint, having a laugh and talking.

Hi Pato, we know Eddie and Jean as well. You say former, have they sold their place? Saw them last September and hopefully will bump into them again this June when they normally go out.
