Is there a monthly council tax on homes like the UK

We are thinking of moving out to Portugal in January 2008 and renting for a while until we find something to buy. Is there a council tax band similar to the UK?

Yes, it is called IMI (Imposto Municipal sobre Imóveis) and is charged on an individual basis (to all owners of the property). It is generallly much lower than the UK.

Please bear in mind IMI is payable by all the joint owners of th eproperty, and it is payable once a year, .Dont be late or they will fine you, and charge extra interest. Its generally cheaper than U.K. and will depend on the value of the property
