If you go inland a few Ks from Benidorm , up in to the mountains you have stunningly beautiful Spain.

Each country has its own version of Benidorm, because there is a market for it. We have areas of Albufiera and of course Praia de Rocha.

As long as the "grockles" stick to these areas, and leave the rest to the more appreciative and discerning, we should be grateful.

Ant1969, allow me reply to your ‘rant’.
I am someone who visited CVO looking forward to a ‘piece of Portugal’. I was somewhat disappointed!
That was my justification for ‘slagging off’ CVO.
I did not call the church in Silves ‘boring’, I said it was uninteresting. There is a big difference. The church is in many guide books as being worth a visit, but I’m afraid it is overstated.
It now appears I am not the only one who has little good to say about P de R!
I am now the proud author of 3 posts on this forum, to express an opinion, not to wind anyone up!

Having a laugh with mates, you bet! Even in CVO.
(Talking of mates, 257 posts on this forum in 25 months! Perhaps you should try and find some mates or are they cyber mates?)

I'm back in the village next week and I think the three of us should meet up get a bit of that funny tobacco that is being spoken about on the forum of late and sit up at the mexabixo terrace with a few pina colada's and discuss this like grown adults

Grinch I would just like to say that anywhere in the Algarve is not going to give you the 'real' Portugal, just like if you go to the Costas is Spain it does not show you the real Spain. Maybe you should have chosen a different destination in Portugal if this is what you were really looking for, nearer to Lisbon is probably more to your taste or even central and northern Portugal would be better, you will find it very Portuguese with no or little European influence, except in Lisbon itself as it is the Capital you have to expect it to be a European cultural city.

What the majority of Carvoeiro fans like is that in comparison to Albufeira or Vilamoura, it is a quieter village which still has a 'feel' of the fishing village it used to be, yes there are lots of bars and restaurants which cater for the European holidaymakers but I don't think you can just say English, there are many Dutch places as well as Portuguese run places, they are there because of the tourist trade in the summer and the golfers during the off season, it has become a very popular area for families during the school break, with the self catering villa rental complexes and apartments it gives a very relaxed place to be. There are many local restaurants just out of the village as well as in the village which do offer the taste of Portugal in their food.

I think you just chose the wrong place for what you were looking for. Don't bad mouth cvo just because you didn't like it it is not very fair, it is only your opinion.

I think that was a fair and balanced response Lesley.

Probably you, like many more of us who live, or have homes around Carvoeiro, also take the opportunities to explore and visit the "real Portugal" when, we are there.

Most of us who have found Carvoeiro are more than happy and well suited to it.

Those who haven't found what they are looking for, have had an experience, and can move on and find what they seek.

Without any condemnation from us, but rather with our blessing.

Which, dear Grinch, is probably the politest F**k off and stop being rude to us, you'll ever get

I'm very upset that Grinch didn't like Carvoeiro but I do agree with some of his points.
I've been going there since I was 6 years old every year and yes there has been some changes.
Improvements, modernisation and it attracts foreigners.
You have to remember that the Algarve has one main trade and that is tourism. Unfortunately, to attract said tourists, you have to cater to them.

I love Carvoeiro because I find it has a lot to offer. It's my second home and I miss it terribly having left after 3 years.

I do think that if you want to experience the "real" Portugal you have to go elsewhere than the Algarve. There are plenty of places to go to where you will experience that.

Everyone has their own opinion and mine is I LOVE CARVOEIRO!

Landing in Faro at 9.45 am on Saturday, God and Easyjet willing. Booked the villa here, know exactly what we're getting. Know exactly where it is. Know where the supermarket is. In otherwords we will have a complete rest. The week ahead is apparently wall to wall sunshine. It's R&R in spades. THAT's CVO. We'll be off somewhere else later in the year but for now we need to chill.

Wow Grinch, You certainly know how to stir things up. However I have mixed feelings about CVO. We have just come back from the most marvellous 2 weeks there, fabulous weather, food, villa, people of all nationalities, scenery, beaches etc. I think you can understand.WE LIKED IT The worst part of it was Carvoeiro centre itself. Someone earlier said it still had the fishing village feel to it, Where? Was it the couple of boats on the beach?.We ate in the centre on only 4 occasions and the food was good, dont get me wrong, but I found it all a bit ????busy. We were staying out by Rocha Brava and went to half a dozen restaurants around there which I found much more pleasant. Maybe now I am an old git I dont realy want to see big girls in small tops showing flabby bellies or grown men in those stupid long shorts and socks and vests, both sexes covered in tattoos and kids who should be either in bed or in school running around at 11.Oclock at night. At least we didnt have to put up with English football supporters.
Anway enough of this.I shall await responses with baited breath.

PS We shall be back next year.

geoffmal, I know what you mean about some of the sights but unfortunately there is no way you can stop the type of people you mention from holidaying there, they offend with their dress and tattoos and noisy children. Unfortunately they are everywhere.

We were in Cannes a few years ago, enjoying the fantastic area, the massive boats and cruisers when it was spoilt by the sound of a couple of families with very noisy kids shouting at each other with beer bottles in their hands and 'chavy' language (sorry if I upset some people with this) I am afraid the worse kind of 'Brits abroad' get everywhere.......

Pouring with rain, not stopped all day.
Been back a week and longing to return.
Shame about the vests, long shorts, tattoos etc. but I guess they spend their money and help the bars etc. keep open.
Nothing spoils CVO for me I will always love the place.
Just going to put my belly button chain on and go to Tesco, got to show my brown belly off

What is this 'real Portugal'? Is the Algarve not in Portugal? Am I living in an imaginary state?

. If you're looking for peasants & donkey carts look at postcards, even out here in the sticks it's moved on from that.
