Can anyone advise me of the best online (or otherwise) way to pick up Portugese. I've tried several books, to no avail. I find it very embarrassing when i'm in the Algarve and cannot converse in Portugese, save a few common words, but cannot cope with the speed in which our portugese friends speak. I know much is due to my own inabilities and travelling once a year to this lovely country does not give me enough time to practice.

There is a holiday combined with language course to be had...in Portimao...A firend of mine told me of it.
Ill look after info for you if youre interested?
Trouble is ..I believe its for a month!
Its a difficult language..and does help if you can get out there as often as possible amongst the people(best way to learn any language)
Though I try hard..I too..find it difficult to get on with 'cassettes'
Have found that a good one is 'P D Q' (pretty damn quick!). Have this for German and its quite easy to follow.
How about evening classes..or doesnt that suit your hours of work?

I don't know of any on-line courses
I am currently trying to improve my knowledge of the Portuguese language.
I attended evening classes in the UK for a year before coming here to live.
I also use a book and cassettes in the Oxford Press 'Take off In.....( in this case Portuguese)..... Series'.
I find this course very useful and well presented.
Another very useful book is Practical Portuguese, Language for Living Here by Sheila Watts, it is good for every day use.
My language skills are improving by not being too self conscious to just keep talking to Portuguese people, who are usually very helpful...and patient.

Don't wish to depress you, but our next door neighbour but one (over the hill in the next valley) is a German guy who has lived in Portugal for 15 years. We asked hime how long it took hime to learn Portuguese and he said he was still learning.
Would you be interested in lessons by phone? That's what my wife is doing and is getting along well. Her teacher is very supportive and not that expensive. PM me for her address.
Annie gave me a Teach Yourself cd and book. I haven't actually opened it yet, but will report back when I do. If it can teach me Portuguese it will be brilliant. I'm a complete duffer at languages, I lived in France for 3 years and still only managed grade 4 O-level.

I, like you, am a complete duffer. I have been married to a Portuguese lady for 18 years, and we’ve been based in Lisbon now for over 2 years and I can only just about get by: make myself understood.
I can watch American movies with no sound but with Portuguese subtitles, and I read those gossip mags you find in waiting rooms. But once they start jibbering (apologies to all) I am lost.
It sounds a real cop-out, I know, but its true some people find learning a language ten times easier than others do (and, in W. Europe Portuguese is def. the most difficult).

Thanks for the advice everyone, it seems i'm not on my own here. I will try some of the methods suggested and give it another go. The 2 week course in Portimao is very tempting, but i'm not sure if i could cope with a fortnight in a classroom in the Portugese summertime, too many distractions. I'm sure it would be much easier here in rainy England.
