I do apologise I didn't mean to infer that Texas was anything like Chile (is there an Amnesty International office there?!!!).
Our forum colleague appeared to be suggesting that there were plenty of civilised countries that use a more heavy handed approach in dealing with crime than that found in modern day Portugal (or other European nations) and whilst that is undoubtedly true, there is very little evidence that the people in these places live in any less fear of violent crime (or any other crime come to that!) and it was G that drew the comparison with Texas.
You are also correct in saying that I overstated the case with my 'ball and backyard' analogy although your 'drivebys' comment strengthens my resolve to not willingly expose my family to a gun culture. I live in a mainly rural community with lots of farming and legally held guns and there are more than enough accidents around here to worry me - heaven knows how happy I would be if guns were more commonplace.
It is a sad reflection of the times that in places like Birmingham, London and Leeds the incidents of gun crime have soared (although they have only increased by 3% in the last full year) and the link to a drug culture is established - with the increase in illegal drug usage comes an increase in gun crime. No answers though

Sorry about that, have a nasty habit of dropping lines like that - I think the USA, and especially Texas are a good example of lack of prevention which they attempt to compensate by excessive punishment.
What would happen if you ban the NRA and make small firearms illegal to purchase and own?
In Portugal, small firearms are only issued under very strict conditions and each gun holder is allowed a limited number of bullets per year. Consequently, you do not get shootouts in the streets and armed robberies every night in, let's say, downtown Lisbon.

As far as the U.S. goes, it was there from the begining...
Personaly, I'm divided on this question.....
If you have an armed population, it is harder for an opressive govenment, from within or without, to have their way.
On the other hand, if Guns are freely avaiable you could have a Gun Fight
At The OK Corral every day (I think Yall think of Texas that way).
However, every Swiss household is armed with the latest military light weapons....
Would not the Swiss be concidered a Gun Culture?
If not, why?
