Visited A Gale last night. After seeing the somewhat negative tone of earlier posts I was dubious but we were pretty happy overall. My Saltimbocca was great, Mrs G's sole excellent. Tom didn't rate the chicken curry but he was basing his judgement on UK standard Asian restaurants. A rather long wait for the main courses to arrive but overall this was well up to the excellent standard we had experienced before. Definitely above the average for similar places in CVO.

We have eaten in here a lot, the Port Steak is very good and the staff are really nice, our only complaint is the Tables are to close together, and we ended up sitting with another family last time we in there, it wasnt really a problem, but just take one 2 seater table out and it will be a bit more comfy.....

We ate here in December (with Joanne, Woolfie, Ed, Pato and respective partners) and to be honest I can't see what all the excitement is about. Both Michael and I had fairly mediocre meals and it was quite expensive. Just a few nights later we ate in Maximes the food was outstanding and the bill only very slightly more than A Gale.

Guess where we will be going again?

I think there isn´t really an exitement with the food - just mediocre, like you said. What happens in Carvoeiro is that some restaurants actually have a better quality/ price relation. But you only see some of few restaurants packed because it has something to do with agencies they work together and who send people there though there might be much better places.

With you all the way on this one - I don't know HOW many times I tell people that Maximes is not as expensive as people think. You look at the prices of the food which are higher than other places, but when the final bill comes, it is always near enough the same as most of the "cheaper" restaurants!

And the food is MILES BETTER!!!!

I found it reasonable, foodwise that is, massive portions too much for a refined gentleman like me, my biggest complaint is the seating, it's like having a meal on the Metropolitan line, they cram you in.

We went back to A Gale again last week. I was moderately happy, my wife was very pleased with her fish. I think we felt that Poco Partido was better, and our best meal during the week.

We ate at A Gale twice last week, and found it excellent both times.
It can get a little crowded in there, and I think the amount of food can be overfacing.
Both my wife and sister in law agreed that the fish was as good or even better than anywhere else we ate.

Fine dining it aint!!

We ate in 2 excellent establishments that provided that, but the bottom line is that you get what you pay for, and when you bear in mind that A Gale costs about half what you would pay in one of these more up-market places, I still believe that it represents excellent value and quality, because I for one cant afford to spend about 40 euros a head every night

Just to say that I'm sure Poco Partido was pretty close in price to A Gale - certainly nowhere near 40 euros per head....

And two adults and a child eat at Maximes for under 50 euros between us if we have wine - less if we don't.

Poco Partido is owned by the guy who used to run A Gale. The waiter used to work at A Gale. I've been there, menu very similar, it IS slightly more expensive, but to me totally lacks atmosphere.

At the end of the day, it comes down to individual choice. If I went as far as Paco Partido, I'd drive the extra 100 yards, and go to Colina village.

We have been going there for several years, but it was disappointing last week. Vegetables never arrived (I know, I should have said something) and the rest of the meal was ok but nothing special, and we had been to Mistral just the day before (see my review of that!)

We will be in A-Gale Monday night.......our regular first night call.....we see Carla and co, open that chilled bottle of BSE, have a good meal, and feel that we are home again.
