Thanks to all who posted and provided info/opinions.

After much discussion last night we have decided that this area isn't for us. We've decided to leave it for this year and agreed that when we visit Portugal it will be somewhere further inland. We'll hire a car and visit the coast on the days we feel like it.

Thanks again. This is a great site and very friendly forum.
