Visiting Portugal

Post by Rossi's idol »

Hiya;
I wonder if someone could possibly clarify a query for me?
We have been informed by the mangement at Monte Santo that all visitors are required to register with local Police within 24 hours of arrival, and on each and every time you visit Portugal. Do the posters on the forum go along with this or is it a law to which apathy rules?
On the other hand, so I make it a point to register to avoid the possibility of any problems arising? So far, we have not registered our presence on the number of times we have visited but there again, I wasn't aware of this requirement.
Thanks for any advice.
p.s. I did check the FAQ but wasn't able to locate anything related.

This is because I don't know af any such 'ruling'. Thanks for posting. I doubt its true, but if so, it is certainly one for FAQ.

If coming from a non EU country, then you have to go through immigration and get your passport stamped (in any EU country). If your passport is not stamped, for some unknown reason, then you have to report your presence to either immigation or report to the Police.

When we were in Carvoeiro last weekend, our management people (Monte Dourado) told me that they need to know if we have any guests using our apartment so they can let the police know. I just took it with a pinch of salt. But if it improves security then no prob. there.

Hi Rossi

We have visited the Monte Santo 3 times now and as the complex is offering 24 hour security protection they take your Car registration number on arrival at the gate and when you check in they advise how many people there are in your apartment . Each time you enter the complex the security guard check your reg . We believe that this is a great benefit and as the crime rates are rising in Portugal we have no issues with checking who is arriving and leaving the resort.

Hope this helps.

This is an interesting question.

Before going to the Algarve last winter, I checked the Travel Report for Portugal on Foreign Affairs Canada's website and I re-checked it just now. They advise that Canadians who enter the Schengen area and go through passport control in a country other than Portugal are required by Portuguese authorities to report to an office of Serviço de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras (SEF-border control) within 3 days of their arrival in Portugal. They must complete some forms that they are to carry with their travel documents until they leave Portugal.

Before leaving for Europe, on another traveller's forum, I asked if anyone knew anything about this requirement but no one had.

Since we were entering the EU (and the Schengen area) through Paris, upon arriving in Faro airport I asked someone who looked like a SEF officer if we had to fill out any more paperwork to legitimize our stay. He said that, since we went through passport control in Paris, there were no other requirements. We experienced no problems during our six-week stay but, on the other hand, no one ever asked to see our travel documents.

Now that a resort is apparently asking for something similar, it makes me think that maybe there is something to this.

We heard a local ( brit ) refer to Monte Santo as " Stalag Luft 3 " due to its high security levels, I think its just to to keep the rif raf like us out ( would not pay 100euros + dinner for 2 anyway )
I have not heard from anyone else who rents about the need for guests to register but it of course makes sense for the management to know who is using your apartment.

As for " rising crime levels " certainly little evidence of this in areas we know.
