I'm not sure we would have discovered Carvoeiro, except for this site. ..... Think it is a great site doing an excellent job. And the forum is still attracting new members, so we must be doing something right.

I agree. Despite the odd post when some members disagree and get all worked up, overall it is a good site. Other sites might have a slight edge on info but they lack the banter that this forum has. Chit Chat is lively and loud, there's always something to make you laugh or make you angry or make you think. What it won't do is bore you.

After finding CVO as out first holiday away together, we then discovered this site which armed us with loads of info on where to go and where to avoid. I printed off, beaches list, bars & restuarants etc and loads of other stuff. But thats me, gotta be armed before I go anywhere, must be the Taurus in me.

We didn't visit Carvoeiro because of the site, but have gained much information and enjoyment from the wealth of information on here and the helpful replies to queries. Love live the board.

Hi I Just want to say I have been following your forum for weeks now as my husband and I are coming out in June for two weeks.I haven't posted a reply or anything before because I haven't been there yet so was more interested in watching and learning and didn't feel I had something to contribute. But I agree that a lot of times people are on the site looking for the really good bits of info you can only get from local people who live there and know the place. Part of the reason we picked here was due to info from here and because it is(allegedly) a wheelchair friendly beach. Whilst I am not in a wheelchair yet I do have chronic arthritis and my mobility is poor ( very embarrassing for a young woman!). I am facing two knee replacements starting in July so want to enjoy myself first. So I would love to know where is the best restaurant ,the easyist beach to get tooand where can I have a nice glass of wine and a bit of craic?

Hi Lynda - whereabouts in CVO will you be staying - will help the locals give you the best restaurants etc.

The main beach is easy to get on, but then does slope and the tide can be fairly strong. If you have a car, other beaches will be best - see the FAQ section on beaches - its very useful.

The town beach does have access via a ramp rather than steps but parking a car close enough to avoid what could be a lengthy walk might be difficult.
There are a couple of parking spaces reserved for those with limited mobility 150 mtrs from the beach but I do not know how you would be able to use them without the appropriate sticker in your car.

All though this might not be appicable to your circumstances does anyone know if PORTUGAL recognises UK disabled stickers ??

Hi Lyndabear, Yes the UK new stickers are legal in all of Europe, especially in Portugal. Another note, you are not charged on many of the toll roads/ bridges etc in Portugal as well. We know cos I have the sticker and we do a lot of travelling 2005-2008.
Before the square changes, in front of the Carvoiro Sol Hotel there were a couple of disabled spots, not sure, if still there since the changes. The police were great when we stayed at the hotel , they put a disabled closed sign on one of the signs for us , for us to use only, and we told them when we were leaving, they could remove the sign. You will find no problem as long as you have the correct stickers.Wherever you are staying inform them before you go and many of the hotels/ bars/ appts etc will do all they can for you, even ensuring you will get a parking space before you get there, especially staying at some of the apt blocks with pools. They .i.e Montr Dourado gave us one of there disabled apts with parking right outside of the door and easy access to the pool.
Please use the full disabled process through the airports and use your wheelchair(£80) from mobility shop. Did not want to use the health service one in case it broke.When you get to the desk they will make sure all goes smoothly and get the special lift car up to the plane/ on and off. When booking your flight tickets their are boxes to fill in for this. Still can be done after ticket bought but before you actually go on holiday. The reason to use all the services is because climbing the stairs up to the plane and down , you are slower and there are always those in a hurry. If you slip you will be in more trouble and embarrasing. This way you avoid the rugby scrum on the plane, the scrum to the bus etc, all is plane sailing and they usually let your family come along in the special rides with you. They always push you as wel in your chair and that is from these airports we have used, Bristol, Heathrow, Gatwick Faro, Losbon, etc Also instead of the shitty health service sticks ,get a fold up one especially if it has a bag, you can then get on the plane with it. Ones with bounce like the mountain climbing ones, Basher is the name, or something like it, they take the pain out of the walking and ease on the joints.
Beaches are a problem, but use this site and look at the accesses , great site on this forum with piccies and directions etc.
We use Lagos,Alvor etc. They all seem to have lovely matting to walk on or wheelchair ability and many of the beach restuarants have wheelchair access or will assist you.
You will have a blast and CVO all help as I know well in the bars, resturants etc .

But above all, have a fab holiday.
My hubby has become great at getting me dancing in the wheelchair on the dance floor and we can reallly get going
