Well, myself and my wife have just returned from a fab 2-week break in San Stefanos in Corfu and prices there are dirt cheap. 2 course meal and 1L carafe of wine about 25 euros for the two of us; large beer about 2.50 euros. Smirnoff vodka and coke 3 euros.
We've been coming to Carvoeiro for 8 years now and love the place (returning in Sept), but i wrote on here a few weeks ago that the bars/restaurants in Carvoeiro really need to reduce prices to attract visitors into the town and out of their villas/apartments. In Corfu they have reduced their prices this year to tempt the visitors.

Noticed on sunday that at least two of the chinese restaraunts are offering all you can eat for 10 euros up to 10.00pm.

Last time I went to one of the Chinese restaurants nothing they served was edible - Doesn't really make it good value!

Is their business bad or is that just a big assumption?

I would expect to pay more for imported beer and yes 7.50 euros does sound pricey, but is it really any different to what you paid in the past? As for Pizza prices, how big was it, what did you have on it etc?

I think you answered your own question there..... you are just entering high season! Everything increases at that time of year and I don't think CVO is unusual in that.

Like i said in a post a few days ago, we've just come back fronm Corfu and prices have been reduced there this year. A pizza in our hotel on a lunchtime was 4 euros, even in town they were only 5 euros. Large beer was 2.50 euros. The resort we were in was NOT a large resort; it was v.similar in atmosphere and feel to Carvoeiro. We've been visiting Carvoeiro for 8 years now, every year, and we love it, but we've just found a place in Corfu which is it's equal in terms of friendliness, atmosphere and now, it's better value. We come to Carvoeiro in Sept.; if we find the value is not so good we may not return next year and onwards.
If some of the forum membs think we're being unfair; Carvoeiro restaurant and bar owners have to get real! We're in the deepest recession for years. Drop your prices or lose custom and repeat visitors.
One point i'd make is that we go into Carvoeiro every night when we visit (or Monte Carvoeiro); we spend our money. We eat in the restaurants every night. We support the local businesses.

Well 18 pounds for a Guinness and a pizza seems a bit steep to me even in the so called high season. To put up your prices from €8 to €12 if that is correct is quite frankly outrageous and Bristle Si is quite correct when he mentions competition from other holiday destinations. Im a bit gobsmacked by all of this The only good thing for me is I like neither of the said two products local beer around €2.50 to €3 is fine I will stick with that.

To put this into perspective you can still get a half decent meal in CVO for that amount with a beer

If we only chose our hoilday destination by the prices charged for beer and pizza we would all probably be in Albania or similar this year.

Portugal has never been the cheapest destination and has attracted those NOT just looking for low prices.
Value is a different matter and as in every business culture anyone who prices themselves out of the market will soon suffer.

Pui does not seem to be suffering , it is always busy , why ? location , location ,location.
CVO and the Algarve has a huge choice available if you look for it.

One thing that has always puzzled me, why do some when abroad still seek out the expensive imported beers that they consume at home ( and then complain about the price ?? )

I do not seek the cheapest places, because they are invariably 'cheap'! At the mo i'm looking for value for money and when one finds a place that meets one's needs across almost everything one is attracted to it again! That's why we've been coming to CVO for eight years now. However, when one comes across another place in southern europe that meets all one's requirements and is 'better value' it becomes a more attractive proposition than a place which is not making an effort to 'keep' its visitors happy and wanting to return.

All i'm saying to CVO is "don't be complacent". Like i said yesterday we support the local restaurants and bars every single day and night of our visits. We don't stay in our villa/apartment and venture out a couple of times/week. But we and a lot of people are really looking for value for money in the current climate. So it may mean for us, only having one drink each with our meal or not tipping with our bills (we generally tip 10%). Either action would result in someone or business missing out. If most other visitors decided to do something similar then the businesses will suffer.

we've noticed that last year it was very quiet in CVO compared to previous summers; if this summer remains quiet it must surely set alarm bells ringing with CVO and its bars/restaurants.

There are a lot of people with children to feed and water and on budgets whom do chose destinations for value. Im sorry any establishment that decides to raise prices by 50% because its high season is as they say down my way are kicking the ar%e out of it. Next year could be more telling than this one when real spending money becomes even tighter bet even the €12 pizza may deflate some. Nice location but a short sighted view so to speak.
