Roof terraces

We are hoping to buy somewhere in the Algarve this year. More than likely it will have a roof terrace as we need some outside space for the kids. However, we will also need some kind of shelter from the sun up there.
Does anyone know what the regulations are with regard to putting structures on roof terraces?

None that I am aware of if it's a Gazzebo like structure made of wood. I hope!

So something wooden may be ok then. What about height restrictions, might there be any?
I don't want to buy somewhere with just a roof terrace for outside space and end up not being able to make much use of it.

If your going to but something more than a couple of years old, with a flat roof, then go and see it between a few weeks or more after the first heavy rain in the Autumn. Most flat roof terraces more than a few years old will leak after heavy rain, although it can take a week or more in some cases for the evidence to show inside. It's a b****r to fix too, if you want to keep the original look of the laldrillo tiles.

If you can't do that, then at least get a hose and cover the terrace with a few gallons of water. If the water does not all drain off quicly and you arte left with puddles due to a surface with no drainage slope, then sooner or later it will leak.

Of course you could just go for a pitched roof, but then the sunbeds tend to slide off.

Thanks Bob, that's good advice.
I do remember my parent's having a problem with a balcony roof leaking and all the trouble that caused. It was a house in the UK that they had had built though!
Unfortunately, we are visiting the Algarve next week and not really hoping for rain but we are hoping to find a suitable property to buy.
I can't see us being able to persuade estate agents to find a hose and use it on the roof terraces though!
We will just have to be extra careful!
