GNR Road Checks

Post by EMM »

Since our last visit we have noticed more GNR road side checks, we are used to seeing UK plated cars stopped but were surprised to see that they are now checking Dutch reg cars ??.

Are there more checks or are we just becoming more aware of them ?

More and more checks are being carried out to catch and fine drivers who have foreign registered cars here for longer than 6 months per year. There are frequent JOINT road checks with GNR and customs particularly at the entrance to Faro airport. There are so many illeagal cars here it was inevitable that action would be taken regardless of nationality. The problem for all who do not try to cheat the system is that if these foreign registered cars are involved in an accident and are subsequently found to be not legally registered the drivers insurance will be void!!

Our lawyer told us quite clearly that the risk is not worth taking as she had heard checks were going to increase - now they have!!! Cars will be seized in some circumstances or alternatively will have to be exported from the Country.

The reason this is happening is that Portuguese cars are so much more expensive (Portuguese car tax) but to be legal and have a car here for more than 6 months in any year you really have no choice either matriculate or buy another vehicle.

Got stopped on Tuesday on the eastbound A22. They had all traffic diverted into the service station and were checking most cars for documents.

Asked me (in my Uk reg car) what I was doing in Portugal (on holiday and on my way to spain) checked the documents and let me go on my way.

ONe thing to be aware of is that once you are stopped your are on the system so remember what story you told them the first time.

Yes got stoppped at Faro airport when we drove over in August and was in the range rover Sport ! I did not admit that we had our own property.
I was also a bit unnnerved since I did not have all my Car Documents ( No Car Registration on me) however did have the Insurance Certificate and My Drivers licence .
No great problems this time, can I keep looking so innocent ! Sold that car last week so I suppose I do stand half a chance !
