Re: Earthquake!
Over the last month there has been increased activity in the region, but this one was by far the strongest. Aftershocks of 2.1 and another at 2.6 further west. Hope this is not going to be a regular occurrence.

Re: Earthquake!
felt it here in lagoa! wow!...i dont need the earth to move in that way
Re: Earthquake!
Woke up in the early hours & thought heavy machinery must be passing by then realised the whole house was shaking & everything rattling, it seemed to go on for ages, I woke hubby up (yes, he literally can sleep through an earthquake!) & then a few seconds later it stopped though I thought I could hear rumbling in the distance for ages. Really disconcerting to feel an entire concrete house shaking. Only one of the dogs seemed bothered & she just hopped up on to the bed, curled up & went back to sleep. & then I started thinking what if it was a really big earthquake that had happened out in the ocean somewhere & at this very moment a huge tsunami(?) were heading our way.
Re: Earthquake!

Has anyone sustained any damage to their property? 6.1 is a hefty ol' shake ...

Re: Earthquake!
One of my dogs freaked and ran in circles. The others just slept through it.
I just checked our pool and we have a big crack running down the south wall of it. The problem there is I don't know if it is new...or not. Need to ask DH and the pool guy.
note to self: spend more time in the pool.

Re: Earthquake!
Good morning , Billy & I felt it , considering he has just had his foot in plaster he made it to me pretty quick ( will suffer later ) . He was awake ( foot painful ) , he felt his bed shake , then saw the cupboard move , put his hand on the wall to steady the bed a felt the wall moving , freaked him enough to move without the crutches.
We live above centeannes Beach.
My heart rate woke me up , I thought I was having a heart attack. I opened the balocony door , but didnt venture out and it was deathly quiet , then all the dogs started barking , apart from my Labrador ( I think she was enjoying being rocked ).
We have felt a few over the last 8 years but this was the biggest. Spanish news reported it as 6.3 , the American met registered it as 5.7. It reached to Seville , Huelva and Morroco felt it as well. So far no reports have come into the Bomberios here in Portugal , neither damage or injury ( not according to the web ).
I checked the beach this morning ( from a distance ) , and there didnt appear to be any rock slides or collapse , anyone out in Carvoeiro this morning take a peek from the Paraiso side towards the cliffs below the school and see if anything moved ( that was always my monitoring site ).
To be on the safe side , dont walk to close to the cliff edges or below the overhangs on the beach , we have just had one sad disaster at Albuferia lets not have any here. ( I know its common sense , but as my lovely younger sister was excited to tell me a few years back as she stood on the bridge , during the flooding at Evesham in Worcestershire..... theres a caravan coming towards the bridge !!! curiosity is a dangerous thing ).
Like most things that occur in Nature doesnt matter how much technology we have we cant prevent things happening. Billy was worried but as I explained if something was to happen all we could do is wait and pick up the pieces and pray that we are looked after. There is not point worrying yourself at what might have or could happen.
It made us think of the boxing day Tsunami and send a prayer to the survivors and hope that their lives are going in the direction of recovery. Also prayers to the family of the police officer who lost his life helping others during the recent flooding in the UK.
All I can say on a lighter note is that it has been a while since my bed moved that much !!! actually thats a lie I moved the furniture around last week !!!
natures little reminder of how lucky we are to be on her planet !!!
Merry Christmas everyone xx WR

Re: Earthquake!
We had one like that when we lived in Lagoa.....the whole apartment block shook....and Hub said he thought he heard the grinding noise of the rocks!
That too, set the dogs off barking....and I believe some parts of the cliff fell..so heed Mandy's words and stay away from overhangs!
I belive it was Biffa said, there are minor ones going on all the time....that we don't even notice. But when you get a big one it sure does scare you!
But theres not much you can do about mother nature...so you have to go with the flow......

Re: Earthquake!
Hope everyone in the area is okay! I can't imagine those concrete homes moving that much without some cracks.
WoW! Hope it is over now for many years to come.

Re: Earthquake!
As I understand it the new builds are built on a concrete platform that is designed to move with the seismic vibrations so the shocks are absorbed. Apparently there was some damage to a couple of old buildings in Faro, other than that we haven't heard of any.
