TRANSPORTING THINGS FROM UK TO ALGARVE

Post by eyeask »

Hi All
Happy New Year to you. Does anyone have any details of companies and idea of prices for transporting 4 radiators (15 kilos each) from the UK (Midlands) to the Algarve (Lagoa area). Obviously the cheaper the better. Many thanks.

Can also recommend Direct International Transport Services - very prompt and efficient service, having been let down by one of the 'man with a van' type operators (don't remember which) who failed to turn up on the agreed date.

Many couriers have a minimum charge, which to me isn't worthwhile if you only have a small amount. We always take advantage of shipping stuff over, adding much more stuff than we think we may need in the future just to get value for money, then the problem arises storing it where-ever(at least a cubic metre which is a lot really) you just got to think it out to your advantage. We have to think about it being picked up in Manchester from our address & delivered door to door to Albufeira, much more expensive, especially if you don't live there full time and have to agree a delivery date & having someone to be there to accept it when they are available at destination for receiving it .Prices can be a lot cheaper if you are based in the south of the UK.

We recently used Direct Transport for a large order of appliances. Service was iffy. One delivery was great, the other was handled roughly. Our oven, dishwasher and microwave were damaged, though still usable.

I don't know who would have been responsible so if you are shipping something of value, you may want to clarify that.

Hi Eileen - we have had 3 shipments by Algarve removals - very good service and cost is ~ £90-100/m3 including pick up etc. However for smaller items we use the normal DHL, UPS, TG express services BUT we go through an agent like www.transglobalexpress.co.uk - they discount by at least 70%. I have just priced for shipping a 42" plasma TV and it was £36. You can put in the sizes and weights and juggle them around until you get the best price - usually one item is "x" but 2 are "x+15%" - also note the weights - a large TV which weighs ~ 30 kg is actually priced for up to 170Kg based on the case size, so if you pack something else in the box its for free.

I want to send over a TV, coffee table and some odds and ends, but as someone previously mentioned its much more reasonable from the south.
If anyone has any ideas for those of us in the north (near manchester) I would be grateful

We also recently used Algarve Removals and found their service to be good. I bought a load of stuff online which I had shipped directly to them in Essex.

I did notice an advert the other week in the back of Portugal News which was for someone transporting a container from Warrington, leaving some time in March - I can't remember the dates but they were quoting £50 per sqm I think. Maybe someone has a copy?

Jonathan.
