Ferries to North Africa

Can you tell me about costs and travel times for taking a ferry from Algecieras to Ceuta. Is it worthwhile to take the trip?

Im going to be doing this trip in a few months, it will cost roughly E50 return and i think it takes a few hours (dependent on what company you go with). Why do you want to go to Ceuta? from what I have been adviced, arriving in Tangier is best as theres more to see and do there and access to other parts of Morocco is much easier. Also ceuta isnt strictly moroccan, it is a Spanish enclave.

…..yes matt & heini this does sound interesting…..Algecieras?? where’s that....Algarve??…and E50 return sounds alright….is this a daytrip thing or would you recommend staying overnight????…I’ve heard about these daytrips from Algarve to Gibraltar for some “tax-free shopping” but never really fancied it……but N. Africa!!!…..hmmm…..

Thanks Matt, is the price per person or per car? We thought we'd leave the car in Algeciras and explore Ceuta on foot. We had visited several Spanish cities over the last few years and we really enjoy staying in Paradors Hotels the Spanish equivalent of the Portuguese Pousadas. There is one in Ceuta, and we thought, we'd get a Moroccan/North African flavour combined with another nice stay at a Parador. Please post back after your ferry trip and tell us all about it.

Digger, if you make that trip, be sure to ckeck out Chippiona, Spain...
it's on the Atlantic Coast on the way to Algeciras.

according to my travel guide, the 35 min trip by foot will cost you E20, E32 for a car-one way. Not sure if you take a car you stil have to pay the per person fee. Are you just doing a day trip? if your going for a little longer you could always get a bus to Tangier and catch a ferry back from there, from the prices I've seen around Morocco for bus travel this will be dirt cheap and you could see a little bit more of the country. Anyway have a good trip!

Me and my extended family did this trip from North Africa to southern Spain and then an onward overland trip to Northern Europe. Can't recommend it - the fare was $1000 per person and the overnight trip was in darkness all the way, and we were forced to stay below deck. No sight-seeing was allowed and when another vessel approached we were told to be quiet or we would be shot!

Then they dumped us on a beach in the middle of nowhere and we were made to hike miles to our pickup point. The 'luxury coach' turned out to be a container truck with no windows or seats! I tell you I won't be using that tour company (People Smuggers Travels Inc.) again.

Matt, thanks for the web-sites. I will explore them on a rainy day. Taking a bus to Tanger sounds like a good idea. Well I still have time to dream about it as we are not coming to Carvoeiro till early January.
