….yes Leslie….those were the days…my mum used to make ginger beer too and I thought it was non-alcoholic, but…??????…(I remember I wasn’t allowed to have much)…….and the elderberry wine was made by an old lady next-door-neighbour and we all knew she was a raving alkey…… ….and this brings to mind ‘sloe gin’….another tipple of the west country I was introduced to at an early age…………..
…………which is a little like ginginha the Portuguese drink of aguardente with otherwise-inedible cherries floating in it…..…chin-chin todos….. :P

 Hi Dgger, Don't talk to me about sloe gin!! Make it ever year, last year was really good the sloes were nearly the size of grapes, hope this year is good too. have been lots of blossom so hopefully lots of fruit. The best way to drink sloe gin is like gin and tonic, plenty of ice, slice of lemon and tonic water, really refreshing on a hot sunny day.
8) Oh dear I now sound like an alcoholic !!! he he

 Hi Gerry,
Yes I'll swap a bottle of sloe gin for some poiten, is that the stuff you make from potatoes and is like moonshine? Lived in Libya for a while back in the early 70's and one of my bedrooms became a brewery/distillary!! totaly illegal, but we used to make moonshine.... bad stuff...... give you one hell of a head if you were not careful!! but the only alcohol we could get.

Isnt Vodka made from potatoes (a la Russia?) or have I got that wrong :? ?
A friend of mine used to make her own 'hooch' (talking 30 years ago)..she made a potato wine that blew your head off!!!
I also recall her making a type of rum :? from fermenting marrow & brown sugar..but I wasnt daring enough to try it
What a boozy lot we are   .................ellie
