Wolves in Algarve?

Wolves in Algarve?
We were watching a wildlife prog. today (Longleat safari pk.Wilts.)
and quite a bit was taken up concerning the wolf enclosure--as we watched H said "That looks like the animal I saw in the Senhora da Verde area that day!"
In my description on Ellies Corner(close encounters) i put the colour as mainly grey but H tells me it had a reddish/almost bronzie tinge --but he was so sure Carlos was right with it being "Lobo".
Anyway my question is,are there folk in Algarve, particularly those in residence for a long timewho have had any experience of wolves or who know of anyone who've encountered them ?
I would love to know as I still have my reservations on Hs & Carlos' encounter. Carlos was very certain as he'd seen them in the Alentejo as a lad--but this far South ?
I suppose the area of Vale do Lobo must have aquired its name from a wolf population way way back.
Thanks Ellie.

Is there really an owner of Val do Lobo --sander, what was it sandpaperer? Martin or are you having me on ?
Was there really a wolf sighting ?
I only ever went to that area to visit an English butcher ,as I couldnt always make myself understood at my local butchers.
At the time,I never realised the significance of the name val do lobo, until Carlos & Hs wolf encounter. Theres a Val do Ursa (bear ?) I think also. Must have been a very wild country at one time !
Theres been some talk here that theyre thinking of re-introducing wolves to wild parts of Scotland--to do with keeping wildcat numbers down.
Think theyre worried about numbers of "roe deer" in north portugal as these are taken by wolves--- I believe poison has been used to get rid of wolves, which i find upsetting --- theyve as much right to live as other creatures.Theyre a much-maligned animal.i find them quite beautiful.I hope the wolf conservation works .I would hate to see them disappear.Boa noite, Elle.

On my "slightly" more serious side as Ellen Frances, can I just put a little word in for wildlife conservation and particularly the one Ive recently joined :
The Wolf Society Of Great Britain.
This covers all areas and particularly where wolf numbers are on the decline.
It costs £16 a year to be a member and during that year you receive 4 Magazines containing news and updates on the societys work.
You can join by e-mailing WS.GBI@VIRGIN.NET
OR/ Type in keyword The Wolf Society of Great Britain, where you can print out the membership form (which contains address) and forward it with a cheque.
Hope you do not mind the ad.Steen. Thank-you, Ellie.
P.S. Aparently the "Canis lupus" numbers are quite good in northeast Portugal.Wonder when and where the next one will be seen in Algarve

Hi Blondelle
Looking at your last two posts on this topic I can see you have definately got the hang of the emoticons now - you see you just needed that private tuition from one of the men - although I always understood it to be women that were most in touch with their emotions. . . imagine Cowboy, Ranger, etc with a feminine side.
Hey Cowboy how would that go down in Texas?
Maddi
p.s. getting silly now and turning "Wolves" in to this weeks' "local drivers", "death of . .", etc. Well we always have topic on the go where we can indulge ourselves.

Wolves in Algarve?
Evening Maddi (or should I say boa tarde)
I was just signing off when i caught your message--yeah,I do seem to have cracked the emoticons thing dont I? Getting quite blase(or however its spelt !
You had me laugh out loud imagining Cowboy & our other male forum friends in touch with their "feminine" side --- "Coop" would never ever live it down in texas would he--i mean, 3 ex-wives --he has his reputation to think of--but i must put in a word of defence, hes always acted in the most gentlemanly way to me (well,i do have this mental image of cool Gary Cooper & High Noon !)
Maddi darling ,I am ( Iswear) trying my hardest to be serious regarding the wildlife conservation--but I do enjoy very much the input of fun and some silliness,in fact i think its great--you & all the others ,always make it worth while --as Cowboy put it once "the interaction" and it makes our lives a bit lighter and sunnier!
Keep smiling & hope the suns shining in Devon--its been quite lovely here in (usually windy) Lincs, Nite,Ellie.
