Another little thing that I find invaluable is a website called gotomypc.com - it works just like pcanywhere (ie you can operate your desktop pc from anywhere in the world and access files, programs etc) BUT it works over the web, not as a long distance dial up, and therefore it only costs you a local phone call to plug into your office network and as far as anyone knows your are still in the UK!

It does cost about £60 a year but if you spend more than a few weeks away and need to stay in touch it is brilliant - I am sure that I could not take half as much time away in CVO as I do without it!

Hope you are well? I did type this earlier but it didn't apear for some reason, I'll try again now as I copied the text!!

I've just read some of the blurb and though I can't offer you a place in CVO but maybe some further though on the mobile situation even though the free dial-up mentioned before sounds workable.

I work in IT and several of our guys have laptops and like me work out of Hotel rooms sometimes. It is correct that the Virgin Data Card is expensive to run as it has its own mobile phone chip in it and therefore you need to buy a contract with it. But why not upgrade your mobile phone anyway and buy one which is bluetooth enabled!! or you might already have one?

You can buy a blue tooth USB adaptor (it looks a bit like one of those snazzy memory stick that you stick in the USB port on the PC) they are cheap - 30 quid or so, and then you can use your own mobile to send and receive information. see examples below...

A Bluetooth USB Adapter adds Bluetooth technology to your existing USB ported PC or Laptop and let's it work with all devices enabled with Bluetooth v1.1 technology. You can wirelessly print, synchronize your PDA information, and create Dial-up connections through a mobile phone.

Try looking up USB Adaptors' on the search engine at www.dabs.com and have a read. They are a really good way of working and it gives your laptop legs!

there are several internet cafes around Carvoeiro, the one under thepost office another under Farol shopping centre and up at rocha brava. There is also one (that I know of) in Lagoa near the new swimming baths and the sports pavillion. Although you have to pay the fees are not too expensive. Pinkie

I think Ive seen the cafe you mean near Lagoas swimming pool/sports centre.Its very useful to know of this for sending e-mails & tuning in to CVO.COM whilst away.
But I still need to have online facilities where I'll be staying in order to send off written work.I know I can type & put on disc..then send when I return...but would still like the facility to be able to get online where I am staying.
Thanks to you Bruno for all your info one 'blue tooth'..it seems I have alot of 'weighing up' to do in considering best method/economical/ & have to say (being a dimwit with computers ) the 'easiest'!

Ellie: At the risk of seeming obtuse and without knowing the need for urgency, how about just burning whatever it is you are doing to a cd and mailing it - overnight if you have to. I am not familiar with European mail but seem to recall that the British mail - unlike our Canadian - is excellent (do you still have two deliveries a day?)

Sometimes you have to just do whatever works.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh don't talk to us about the post!!!!
We used to get two postal deliveries a day (although I only ever got one) then about a month ago it was decided by 'them' that it cost to much and they would reduce it to one. Before we always got our post by 7.30am now you are lucky to see a postman before 12.00 noon. For housholds this is not a problem, but for businesses who depend on the post it is a nightmare, trying to get the post to the right departments and then answered and back to the post room by 4.00 for the outgoing post it is manick. Well done to the Post Office!?!

Afraid its all too true what Lesley says SHOWWY!
We also have to wait till nearly noon for our 'one' delivery a day
and I'd be mailing it from Portugal......in April (whilst in CVO for 2 weeks) I sent letters/cards to Hub & family....they didnt arrive until 'after' I came home!!! say no more
But thanks for your thoughts...if it does work out too expensive..Ill simply have to get it all on disc and send it when I get back.. does all this sound gibberish to you?..it does to me..maybe Im going a bit potty..no wine for me tonight

On the subject of the English Post, our's sometimes doesn't come at all and then we get a whole pile two days later.... suspicious.
So, is anybody interested in establishing a carrier pidgeon system
I think it would work better - there's a couple of pidgeon's who live in the tree next door, I'm sure I could recruit them, although my cat is pretty partial to fluffy things. we could train them to go over to cvo and back and Ellie wouldn't need all this new fangled technology!
