If the chief of the GNR acknowledged that ADM is a hotspot for crime, then you might have thought they'd have done something about it?

sitting reading all this trying to think of anyone we know who HASN'T been burgled in the past couple of years and am struggling to do so.

ADM is indeed a hotspot, 4 friends there all been burgled. friends near the tennis club are next to a construction site, they popped out for dinner recently and came home to find their fence down, french doors caved in, house ransacked & their safe kango'd out of the wall.

we're in VDM near a new resort under construction, when we were burgled the GNR basically shrugged & suggested guns to shoot anybody we found on our property!

it's a sad fact but crime is definitely on the increase here, living near a building site or house renovations is a very common story, as is yourself or any neighbours having eastern european gardeners.

Intermarche has regular stories of various sorts of car park crime, whenever I go there the guard is inside chatting to the staff! but really it's a shame we need one there in the first place.

suggestions for insurance companies comes up on here a bit, it's important particularly if you have nice tv's/ computers/ mp3's etc. around or any valuables in the safe; Fidelidade gave us 35p in the £ of our claim and said if we appealed it would be a year before we saw any money; Imperio Bonanca who we recommend on here come round to see what you have and insure accordingly, they have an excellent reputation for claims.

I certainly do not wish to tempt fate but in our circle contacts most full time residents we do not know of one who has been broken into.

Obviously the risks rise on properties that are left empty for months at a time and on predominatly tourist developments.
As we have discussed at length the onus today be it Portugal or Portsmouth is on the owner to make life as hard for the criminal as possible.
We all know that security particularly on older properties did not figure highly in the building specification.
We have a apartment , not in Carvoeiro but in Albufeira where if you listen to all that is said is far worse for crime.
We have additional window and door locks, the development has CCTV and security patrols.
But as we have found when we have done towel changes etc, doors/windows left open. Mobile phones, laptops, etc left in plain view. There is little an owner can do when this happens.
Owners should insist that receptions do not had out keys without carrying out the necessary checks.
You would be concerned if you new how easy it can be sometimes to get keys.

I don't see why there cannot be more of a police presence, as the area is clearly recognised by the GNR as a crime hotspot? If you're measured by how many crimes are solved, then it seems obvious to head for the area with the high levels of activity.

I agree the GNR just seem to accept the level of break in and I cannot see why they cannot nail more of these types. I had a break in and several images of little swine was captured on the security system but he had a cap and scarf on so the GNR said that they could not prosecute even though they had a very good idea who it was. So if they know who these people are then why not tail a few on change over days at night and catch them in the act? Not a huge drain on resource and a relatively simple operation to plan and execute? They simply have to get some results as the number of breakins will continue to grow and grow. It is beyond me why they can't do more as the paperwork in generating numerous crime reports must be killing their reosurces.

We have a place in ADM, and were unfortunately burgled last year. It was my fault though, as I left a shutter open. I make a point of looking closely at people wandering around the area, and make sure they see me, although this probably makes no difference. However, without the GNR stepping up a gear, I cannot see how the situation is going to improve. We installed camera security, and beefed up the shutters and doors, but I have to say, I'm just waiting for the next phone call. I love the house, the views, and the short stroll into town, but the level of crime certainly puts a blight on our enjoyment of what should be a wonderful experience.
