coming back for the first time in years

Post by kennycapes »

All,

My wife and I are returning to CVO for the first time in about 5 years. Before then we were holidaying there each year for about 5 years and always loved it. I am looking forward to coming back but have just been back to the forum to find a lot of chat about crime. I know crime is everywhere but i am bring my 6 yr and 3 yr old kids and feel a little worries about break ins. Each year where ever we go im always am extra carful on security. I always shut the shutters and double lock the doors, have there been cases where poeple have had their places broken into whilst the shutters are down or is it more when poeple forget to shut them etc.

We are staying in Club Golfmar near Rocha Brava, does anyone know what that area is like. we are coming out in August.

Sorry to mention the bad side as we have always loved it here but i am a little worried.

Do all residents still love it here or are you looking to sell and move on?

Many thanks all

I've only had a place there for 5 years and, apart from a few business closing and new ones opening, and the traffic changes in the square, I can't say I notice any difference at all!

We've had our place for about 6 or so years and have no intention of selling up and moving on. We really enjoy our times in Carvoeiro and it really still is a lovely place to visit. I think closing patio doors and shutters when you go out for the evening is just common sense. If it was left to my OH, he wouldn't bother but I'm a bit more careful.

thanks so much. Believe me my wife has even been know to moan about how safe i am but i would say without being boring. Thanks for the replies i cant wait to get out there. My 7yr old son had a broken arm last year in plaster and then 2 days in got Chicken Pox so last year was a bit of a disaster and we are all hoping for a great time.

Thanks all.

As you say Kenny, you can be affected by crime anywhere, but don't let the recent high volume of traffic on this subject put you off. Carvoeiro is a lovely place, and generally very safe. If you lock up etc, then I'm sure you'll have no problems and enjoy a great family holiday.

hi Kenny,

Club Golfemar is a relatively new resort development between Vale do Milho and Rocha Brava, east of Carvoeiro on the way to Benagil; there are a few villas but it's mostly all 2 and 3 bedroom terraced apartments.

there was meant to be some tennis courts but that's now been laid to lawn & some nice plants. There's a big communal pool with plenty of loungers etc which all looks very nice.

You're walking distance to Rocha Brava reception so you can get milk & bread etc., you're a five minute drive to Intermarche for a big shop although as you see on here we mostly prefer Pingo Doce and Pao de Acucar a bit further away in Lagoa.

Your nearest beach is Centiannes which is nice & a short walk but you could drive 10 minutes to beautiful Praia da Marinha.

Security? we've had our villa for 25 years and have live here 10, the incidence of crime has definitely gone up sadly; you should be fine if you're in an apartment as you'll only have 1 big shutter to deal with in the back patio windows; if you're in a villa the golden rule is not to leave front and back doors/windows open at the same time, and as everyone says, lock up when you go out.

As you know, the Algarve is incredibly busy in August, all the Portuguese come down from the big cities as well as all the foreign tourists but you'll be nicely tucked away & can engage with the crowds as and when you wish :)

have a good time

Kenny

We've owned on Clube Golfemar for 4 years. I've had to repair one of my shutters and they are bloody hard to break into, so will provide you with excellent security during your stay.
The recent posts on the forum have concerned opportunistic burglars who operate when the premises are occupied and the shutters are up.

Sunman pretty much sums it up.

Be vigilant, but don't let it spoil your holiday.

Compared to the UK you have nothing to worry about!

One of the reasons we love the Algarve is the feeling of generally being safe and secure at any time day or night!

Enjoy!

I think Superbocker's got it absolutely right, it would be a mistake to come out here & think it's some sort of Shangri la, exercise the same sort of vigilance as you would in the UK or anywhere else & you should be fine. Hope you have a great holiday, we enjoyed our holidays here so much we moved here permanently :D .

Kenny, we have had an apartment in CVO for 6 years and like all other comments here it's the normal common sense things that make the difference but no need to repeat. We think CVO is still a safe and enjoyable holiday for the family. So keep that excitement going and enjoy every minute with the kids
