AntiVirus Software Updates...
Internet Security, That is a big subject; sorry to hear that you have had a virus Ellie! 
Like Showwwy, I have spent hours looking after computers at work with these kinds of problems.
However, since I started there I have increased security and investigated which is the best software, which includes Antivirus Protection with regular (3 hourly) updates, a Firewall, malware and spyware prevention tools!
Now I know there are lots on the market and some are free to download. However, you get what you pay for and the free ones are not as good as the subscription ones, although they are better than having no protection at all. Showwwy is right on the Free ones. Zone Alarm is a good Firewall if you don't have one.
All my home office workers now have Trend Micro's - PcCillin Internet Security loaded on their Laptops/PC's and its cost us £30 a year to subscribe to further yearly contracts. However, this is cheap compared to loosing work, address books etc. Trend Micro updates more quickly than Norton AV and AVG and and I have had to remove Norton AV from our PC's at work because it just wasn't stopping viruses getting through. PCcilling has been stopping up to 40 virus's A DAY hitting out mail server - that was 280 attempted malicious virus hits last week alone!! Not only that, but our computers port (our connection to the internet was scanned and probed - Ooer - by someone over 20 times last week! I think it is the Klingons!
) Hightened Internet Security saved the day!

One of my neighbours recently shared with me that his computer was going ever more slowly and that he had lost the use of his mouse. On conversational investigation I realised that he had not renewed his Antiviral subscription because he couldn't afford the £30 after Christmas and as a result of loosing work on his PC his business has virtually collapsed and he has lost all his records except those he has saved on floppies! Unfortunalty he lost his work! However, another PC that I was able to load up with PcCillin found 233 damaged files by four viruses.
If you are on the Internet, you need security and will need to update it every day. If you have ADSL you need to have your AV set to update as frequently as it will allow - 3 hours for PcCillin.
My sympathy goes out to Ellie, but I am glad that you know realise how secure you must make your PC. There are those out there who are trying to make a living by robbing you of your information and sometimes your credit card details, which are inadvertently left on your machine after a transaction. A Daily Mail report recently suggested that the banks are loosing Millions of pounds each year through the this illegal, and many times, untraceable trade!
Be alert to Internet crime and cover your tracks, Internet Security needs to be tight on your PC.

Chap put AVG 6 on mine this week but is this not okay?
Im now doing most of my work on this laptop..and yesterday spent yesterday having a clear out on here.....Bruno..you said fella you know his p.c was very slow ..thats how ours was..and in end kept turning off.
It is running better now(after costing £110 for 5-6 hours work? )....but dont know how long for.....would it be better to go in for new/reconditioned p.c. if it all goes again?
its 4 years old ..computer bloke said thats old?
Anyway..thanks for all your help and useful websites etc...do appreciate...Ellie
p.s. luckily publisher has all my chapters safely..so they were able to send me those chapters Id lost..thank goodness! ......nite

Thanks for your notes. Yes, 4 years is old for a pc in terms of speed and style, but heck, if all you want to do is write your book and do some other things that do not take serious amounts of memory, then it is still very usable so dyou don't really need to buy a new one until it actually dies.
You also said that you had Windows 2000. This is a really good stable operating system. However, it does need to be updated on the Microsoft Updates site!
Do you know what this is?

...and about updating the AV everyday. It depends on what type of Internet connection you have. But we must remember the fact that there are people out there who are evil and their sole purpose is to try and destroy and create havoc on the internet.

Shoot the bloke. If he is supposed to be supporting your computer and didn't insist you have AV, he isn't doing his job.
We use Norton AV set to do automatic updates and have never had a virus. Possibly lucky with timing (virus release versus update coming in). Norton has caught 272 viruses since 1st May and we get around 100 emails a day. It costs around £13 pa, which is probably less than you paid your bloke.
Also, certainly if you are on broadband, you need a firewall, otherwise you certainly will get people fiddling about with your pc, using you to send out spam etc. Zonealarm is free and works well, you just need to be careful when you download and install it. They do their level best to point you towards the pay version, which you don't need really.
Lastly backups. If you haven't got a cd writer, please get one, £20 plus vat. Disc drives can just break with no warning at all. Anything important should be backed up regularly. I had a customer who failed to back up for a year although they had been shown how to do it. It cost them £500 to get the data back from the broken disc.
Re house. We are just waiting for a quote from a German guy who we met in April, should get it very soon. I had to do a very detailed design (thorough nation) so it should get done this year. I really hope so, I hate that caravan.
We also sorted the grass cutting problem. We met a guy who has a dozen cows who are now using the land for grazing. He was so pleased he brought his tractor over and cleared about an acre of brambles. I must do something on the web page, stick some more piccies up.

My pc is 6 years old, they don't wear out! Windows 98 seems to slow down with time and get somewhat dodgy, NT, XP and windows 2000 don't. Discs can break after 4 years or so, but if you back up properly, it doesn't really matter. I've got 10 computers here, none of them are even close to new, all are just fine thank you.
You might have spyware floating around, or you might just be a bit short of memory, this can make a big difference. Give us a ring if you like, I'll talk you through a few things, no charge obviously.

I forgot to say that 'he' re-installed Windows 98 on Thursday..apparently when we bought laptop(2000 ex) last summer H installed this onto the P.C.. which hes been told it wasnt suitable for..and to put it bluntly its 'buggered it up'
But when he re-installed Windows 98..one of the discs was damaged as well as the Bagel virus...so stopped pc working other than in the safe mode.
So he took it away installed new graphics card and new Windows 98 and new AOL 9
fingers crossed ..its okay at present
Im going to print off all your posts to show H as it will give him idea how to go about things.

....that reminds me that when I first went to Benigil, they didn't have the whole village on tap! Which meant that whe you went to the lav, you had to take a bucket of water in with you from the well! You also had to remember which bucket was whicha s you didn't want to mix it up with the drinking water one! Er!
I remember one evening going in and lifting the seat only to find a lizard in the bowl sitting there looking at me

We lived in 3rd floor apartment(Lagoa)...and I never knew we had little geckos in there at first(Im a bit squeamish about having such things at'close quarters).
We'd only been in there about a week..when one night I noticed H & J looking at each other then at a picture on wall.H winked at son.Then I saw it..the gecko darted out from behind pic then back again..i did a sort of squeak....then said."itll have to go!"
H actually caught it and very patiently took it downstairs & let it go.
Sitting in bed that night..movement caught my eye..looked up and on ceiling by window were 2 of 'em......
I was frightened to go to sleep that night..case one fell in my mouth
H refused to remove them and said "you gotta learn to live with them Elle"
which I did...........
Anyone out in CVO got a chameleon in residence I wonder?Use to see them quite a lot in bars /restaurants..often wound round the light.........
P.S. Know Im going off topic here but.. did you know..that we swallow 8 spiders on average during our lifetime?

Now there's a good one! I really can't imagine that that story is a real one, but then again you never know?
By the way of stories: When in Germany (1983) there was a story in the Stars and Stripes Newspaper about this guy who went into his toilet one evening and as he bent down and looked through his legs before sitting on the seat, saw a snake in the bowl!
Yes, and it wasn't any small snake either, it was the one that had escaped from the zoo on the otherside of town during the day! It took two guys from the zoo with a lasoo thing to pull this creature out of his lav. Eventually they removed it - all 16 feet of it. Apparently it had escaped and got into the sewer's!
We all laughed on the Airbase at the time - it wasn't April 1st - but I wonder was it really true...
...often when I get up in the night I have to turn the light on ...
