A22 Tolls: How to get your Transponder

Post by Aitch »

I am creating a new topic for this as I think it may be helpful, and to avoid its getting lost in the degeneration of the exiting topic.

I read in The Resident today that transponders are available from MS Car stands in Faro and Portimao. So I went to Portimao today armed with my vehicle documents and got my transponder. There were no queues and I was attended to by a very helpful lady, who completed all the paperwork and handed me my transponders (cost €27). You have the choice of being billed every 1, 3 or 6 months, and if you have more than one vehicle they can all be put on one account. All that remains then is to go to a Multibanco to activate your account.

All very painless really, and also worthwhile as the Via Verde system is valid on all portuguese motorways.

Thats also my understanding. What I do not understand is that it is the driver who is responsible for the fees, not the car owner, so why is the transponder vehicle specific? As we sometimes drive down and sometimes fly/hire car then a multi-use one would be great. I'm not sure if the transponders are complete or if there is a chip card that fits into them - if so it should be simple to put your chip card into transponder on hire car. But then, as the whole thing seems to be designed to make it as difficult as possible, that would be too simple.

MS Car is at Pedro Mourinha Tel. 707 282 700

From hospital, do not take underpass, turn rt at roundabout, past new shopping centre. At next r/b turn left past Maxmat & Pingo Doce. At next r/b turn right and MS Car is about 200m on your right. Next to Mercedes showroom.
