When you get here go to Pina the garden centre on the 125 between Lagoa and Porches (but close to Lagoa, just past Izi on the left) and you will get good advice re which plants are suitable etc. For irrigation etc there is a horticultural merchant behind Pina called Sanipina which is well worth a visit. They supply farmers and locals as well as ex-pats and you will get all tools, machines, irrigation tubes and connectors, matting for weed control, pesticides, pool supplies and in fact almost everything you could ever want for the garden except plants!! They also sell wine (and wine making equipment), pet food, barbecue supplies, boots, garden gloves, wellintons and are very eager to help. If plants are not thriving take along a cutting and they will diagnose problem and suggest a cure - a great resource for anyone interested in gardening.

That is good, practical advice.
We found both places by accident, and use them quite alot.

They are very friendly in Pina....and once you get to know them, they go out of their way to be helpful, even once coming out and replacing a tree that never took, and died.

When you get your place finished, we will be more than happy to offer you whatever help and advice we can.

Both Pina & SaniPina are excellent, I have a discount/loyalty card with Pina, it's worth getting, especially when you're just getting started on your garden.

I don't believe I said human bottoms. He sniffs dogs' bottoms to see what it's all about.

The doggies held a meeting,
They came from near and far,
Some came by motor cycle,
And some by motor car
Each doggie passed the doorway,
Each doggie signed the book
Each one unshipped his asshole
And hung it on a hook.

One dog was not invited
It sorely raised his ire
He ran into the meeting hall
And loudly shouted "Fire!"
It threw them in confusion
And without a second look
Each grabbed anothers asshole
From off another hook

And that's the reason why sir,
When walking down the street
And that's the reason why sir,
When doggies chance to meet
And that's the reason why sir,
On land, abroard or home
They'll sniff each other's backside...
To see if it's their own.

When you go into Pina just ask at the desk they'll give you a leaflet to fill in & then you'll get your card through the post, in the meanwhile make a note of your number, the assistant will give it to you, so you can claim your discount when you shop even though you haven't got your card yet. I think if you haven't got a postal address you can pick your card up from the desk. Another good place for plants are the markets there are always several plant & produce stalls, the one in Algoz is particularly good for this. A list of markets & dates is usually in the Resident newspaper.

My former neighbour made his own water sprinkler out of an old hose.

He put holes in the hose and had the hose on titled angle so the water would flow down consistently; it certainly worked provided the holes are clean cut and evenly distanced. The whole garden got watered left to right but the hose must be on full blast so that the water can be forced out and reach a good distance from the exit points.

Certainly beats forking out €600 somebody here mentioned. Absolute rip off.
