Continente - the worst meat in Portugal

Post by matoserrao99 »

Hi,
i usually buy all of my meat direct from the butcher - or at least from the butchers counter in the supermarkets and on the whole think meat / butchery in Portugal is excellent.

In a rush on Friday and picked up 2 pre-packed lots of pork chops and a pack of large diced pork for the bbq in Continente.

The worst rubbish ever, smelled off and the diced pork was 90% fat cunningly presented meat side up.
The chops were even worse, covered in bone fragments, cut at every angle, apart from the couple on top nothing remotely like normal chops.
Complete rubbish and impossible to eat because of the shattered bits of bone everywhere.

Please don't buy this crap from them - happy ending is my dogs loved it

If anyone can recommend a good local butcher - please let me know

I use the butcher in the old market, fresh and good quality. I believe the butcher in Portimao on the roundabout is good but cant remember his name - Talho? maybe someone can help

We always use the meat counter at Pingo Doce and find the meat excellent, we had wonderful fillet
steak when we were out in May.

If you are refering to the butcher on the right by the makeshift roundabout in Portimao after driving over the old bridge, the company is Andifar, think thats spelled correctly, good quality.
Should you prefer your chops cut English style they can do that for you.

The Irish, Aberdeen Angus,- yes thats correct - rib steaks from Pingo Doce are wonderful - I think its around €8-9/kg and I usually buy the prepacked ones for €1.50 - €3 and have never had any complaints - tender and succulent - I even bought 6 back in my carry-on last Tuesday!
The whole lamb legs are also very good - they dont often have them and when I was there last week I found out why - a certain English lady who runs a restaurant in CVO had 10 in her trolley!

Agree about the meat in Pinge Doce and certainly the local lamb.

Were n't we told that all the lamb served in the locl restaurants was frozen NZ and came from MAKRO
