Lamy Estores installed the electric shutters in my house and seem a good company.

Be aware though that electric shutters on small windows can easily be forced open as I learned to my cost. While convenient and quite attractive they do not provide the security I had imagined and I now have grilles on all my small windows in addition to electric shutters.

I have electric shutters fitted to all our major windows but I need to find a way to ensure they do not jam or seize-up. I have silicone sprayed all the rails but cannot get to the machinery at the top to make sure all of that is lubricated.

We had an attempted burglary a few weekends ago while we were out - by having the utility room window forced (unshuttered) but fortunately the alarm scared them off and Charon were on the scene within 2 minutes. We are having bars fitted on those smaller windows as a result.

I never had difficulty with Prosecom - until the latter months of their earn-out when spurious bills began arriving for 'call-outs'. Regretfully for them - the charges related to dates when we were in residence and were quickly credited.

Friends of ours have not been as fortunate and as a result cannot get an account with Charon due to the bad debt. It amounts to €1,700 and is a sham - but Charon won't back down. They might have done if it was addressed directly - instead it was done through the management company and never resolved.

Ever since we moved here, I changed the nature of our account and do not pay for call-outs. Which is just as well as we have had 5 false alarms caused by the cats. It costs €560 per annum and frankly - it's worth every cent. I can't fault their service. My wife would not be comfortable in the house on her own if we did not have the Charon system.

Later this morning we are having bars fitted to the 8 windows that do not have shutters. We also have the dog who woke us the other morning sat 2.57am - as two guys in a van were picking figs from bushes at our back gate. They moved away when I put the lights on came out with my pick-axe handle + our eldest son and the dog. Best to be safe than sorry

You can get "pet sensitive" sensors now, they don't pick up the animals, if you want details I'll get them for you.

Thank you - we do have pet sensitive sensors fitted in one particular room - but went out believing the cats were out - they weren't and neither were they in the room with the pet sensitive sensors either. The sensors are sensitive to movement of anything over 25kg - it just so happens that the attempted burglary was made through that room which activated the alarm and alerted Charon.

Incidentally, the Charon guy told me that they have a permanent 24 hour patrol operating in Carvoeiro as a result of complaints from clients. During the peak season (July and August) that is increased to two patrols. That's of little use in mid-Winter when there's nobody around and the burglars know it. While there's an argument for greater presence at this time of year - when cash and small items (mobile phones, iPods etc) are more accessible for the opportunist thief - I contend that the more 'sophisticated' thieves are looking for bigger opportunities (furnishings etc) in the winter - so security presence should be robust all year round.
