Cereza and Blue... take no notice of EMM and his scathing comments about Brits and their love for their favourite foods. He has been spouting his self righteous remarks on another forum and getting the backs up of people on there. He seems to think that since we are in Portugal we shouldn't dream of eating( let alone actually doing it) anything which isn't pure Portugal. he didn't address the point made by Blue about what he eats when in the UK, whether it was pure english or not!

One of our reasons for choosing Portugal is that it is not the Costas or tenerife where this company originated and where it found its target market.
I have no issue with any shop selling decent food where ever it comes from , I just do not think that the " Iceland Frozen food " product has any place in anyones diet be they in the UK, Portugal or outer Mongolia.
Nor seriously can i understand why those who have chosen Portugal as their home have received this shop with an almost orgasmic response. it is beyond my understanding.

Dinner tonight is line caught cod and tomorrow Arroz da marsico . sunday roast chicken. ( we are back in the UK.)

James we are in full agreement, there is a mistaken perception of value if you look only at the ticket price.
As has been proven many times on cookery programmes, preparing from fresh can be done for much less that the cost/kg of this type of food.

Lack of time. inclination . education are all used as reasons why there is a market for these products . That is what they are a manufactured product pretending to be food.

Spot on! When Jamie Oliver had his tv series on he asked a few children what was their favouite food? "Chicken nuggets" was the reply and some of them only seemed to eat it. When he took out the ingredients to show them how this fast food rubbish was made they were shocked - there was very little pure chicken meat in it. It was chicken entrails, bits of discarded carcass and addded chemicals.

Cigarettes have shock warnings so should these fast foods. NHS specialists are forever warning about the huge number of people being treated for obesity and the numbers are rising and at a worrying rate too.

I said " almost " and was thinking of the report from about one shopper in paroxisms of delight because she had seen a picture of a Chicken Kiev or was that a euphamism

Unfortunately as a nation and as was confirmed by the jamie Oliver experience too many are happy to eat reprocessed engineered foods high in fats , sugars and E numbers.
If the parents will not change what hope is there for the next generations, higher obesity, heart problems, diabetes, poor attention spans and bad behaviour at school .

Not sure, but they sell fresh meat and poultry, vegetables and fruit. They're healthy.

I was going to resist the run with the ex-pat herd to Iceland.....BUT....my friend has told me that they sell Waitrose hummous.

Portuguese people are slim, generally, so I am sure an invasion of the culinary delights of Pot Noodle, Monster Munch, Sunny Delight and Irn Bru to name a few of the popular brands in the UK will not tempt them especially when they live in a culture of healthy eating.

One of my neighbours has an apartment in Tiovli she goes twice a year but she goes on a regimental diet months beforehand as she is concious of the Portuguese waistline being somewhat smaller.

James Faro - I don't know where you get the idea that as a general rule the Portuguese are slim! granted there are some tiny Portuguese but a large number of females have short legs and very large thighs and hips topped off with a smallish waist.

Anyone reading these posts who had never visted an Iceland store would think that the place was crammed with unhealthy frozen foods and nothing else. I suggest you follow the link in Martin's post at the beginning of this topic and read the list of products that they stock. On the top left is a list of products. Click on 'Fresh Products' and you will see fresh meat, fruit and vegetables listed. There are lots of grocery items that are not frozen (e.g cereals, tea, coffee, biscuits, etc.). There are also baby products and household goods. Then there are the non-food products such as magazines, flowers, wines and spirits, travel items, luggage, etc. A range of chilled foods is also carried. To dismiss the place as a store which just sells frozen food is a little unkind. Like all supermarkets, it's up to you the shopper to choose what you think is best for you. The Iceland image promoted by the chavvy ads in the UK has clearly touched on a rich vein of snobbery. The reality here seems to be somewhat different

The store in albufeira is fortunately not Iceland Frozen Foods although unfortunately it does sell a lot of their products.
It is however still a Brit Store selling mainly Brit products aimed at a Brit clientele
I wonder how this same " Brit "clientele would havereacted to a Asian supermarket opening in their UK highstreet with a product range aimed at an Asian/Muslim clientele having used an advertising campaign almost exclusively in Urdu or Hindi.
You can just imagine the D Mail and D Express headlines.
