no longer updated - Tolls on the A22

So what do we do????

We arrive back next week.......drive from the airport in our car, (no sensor or what ever you are supposed to have)

Are we supposed to go to the post office and pay up....or what??

Can anybody enlighten me please????

Thanks guys. I think the A road will be OK at this time of year, but I agree at certain times it could be very busy.

If you use the A22, you're supposed to pay at the post office 2-5 days after passage.

You can check the tolls due for payment at http://www.ctt.pt/fectt/wcmservlet/ctt/ ... divida.jsp Unfortunately it isn't at this time available in English, but you can check by entering the registration number in the first field, and the text on the image in the second one, and clicking "CONSULTAR" below. The list of tolls to pay should appear.

As far as I can see from all of the information posted on this subject you have several choices.

If your car is a Foreign registered car then at this time you are screwed so do not read any further.

However if you have a Portuguese registered car, do as you normally do and drive down the A22 to CVO and home.

After 24 or 48 hours ( not sure which at this point) check on the CTT web site to see how much you owe, then toddle off down to the post office with sandwiches and coffee in hand ( could be along wait) and pay. Job done.

CTT Payment

Your next problem is when you want to leave, the toll cost is not available for 24 or 48 hours after you have left. You are Wherever in the world and the CTT pay station is in CVO, screwed again.

One solution if you have management company looking after your affairs, you could ask them to pay it for you.

Why not get a chip for your car linked to your credit card, come and go as you please.

I was planning to come out again in Feb but I don't think I'll bother now. Another few hundred euros lost to the Algarve retail community. No objection to paying tolls but I couldn't be bothered with all the hassle it will involve.

I sincerely hope the jamielyon4 has it spot on, otherwise I am going to receive a shock one of these days. the fiesta that I hired earlier in the month is obviously still spinning up and down the motorway. Unlike others, I did not even attempt to pay the first leg in the post office (despite the pull of the blond lady

) as Travelrent stated that they would debit the amount due from my credit card when they were informed of it, I assumed they had come to arrangement with the toll company but doesn't look that way now.

Besides using the CTT (post office) to pay your toll charges you can also use pay shops. My friend spent over 20 minutes queueing in the post office and gave up in the end, someone she spoke to advised her to go to a payshop as it was quicker, got there and no-one queueing and was in and out within minutes.

are you really serious about not bothering because of the hassle or did you just want to sensationalise a statement about another few hundred Euros lost. I suspect it is the latter

I have spoken to 3 families over the christmas period that live in my area who visit the
Algarve regularly for holidays and all have said they have heard about the tolls and the loss
of Easyjet flights out of Stansted and will probably now go to Spain again instead, not good
news for the Algarve.

Ron500 - my comments were written not to sensationalize anything but to express frustration and a degree of hopelessness at the Portuguese inability to sort this out in a reasonable manner and time-frame. I love Portugal and visit 4 or 5 times a year, on each occasion spending considerably more than a few hundred euros. However, if I am only coming over for a week then on top of the nuisance of having to use Ryanair and sorting out my hire car late at night, I have no wish to spend a further chunk of time trying to find somewhere to pay a toll or risk a fine on my credit card when I get home. I will be back to Portugal but perhaps not until this toll business is sorted.
