RIP - Antonio - Sr La Bamba - Round Up Saloon

Post by R.Wethereyet »

Very Sad News.

Antonio, from the Round Up saloon passed away today after a short illness.

He will be sadly missed by all who knew him or had the pleasure to meet him. His infectious smile and a presence as big as Will's will never be forgotten.

Ciao Antonio.

I had the pleasure of knowing Antonio for a long time.

A legend that will be missed.

Ah Jesus that is really really sad news. What a lovely lad. Big Will took him under his wing over the last few years and helped him out and now to hear that is terrible. my family are genuinely shocked as all my kids of different ages had great time for him. We always knew we had arrived when we met Antonio and his big smile either along the street or in the bar -

António was a very, very, very good friend of mine. I know him for quite a few years and we became friends when I started working at the round-up as a musician.
We had great fun singing and dancing together. I remember both of us singing in the middle of the road on our knees and the cars passing in front and behind us. Then we would jump through the window to go back inside the bar. Will used to go mad at us. After working we used to go to the LSD bar and have a "tosta Mista" (cheese and ham toastie) and a couple of beers. Then I used to stay at his house cos I was too drunk to drive back to Portimão.. we stayed sometimes in his little Disco listening to music and looking at all the pictures and flashing lights till early hours in the morning before we went to sleep.
I could stay here all night sharing hundreds of stories like this one. The only thing I know is that yesterday I've lost a brother and a friend.. yes António was like a big brother to me..
Repousa em paz meu amigo, serás sempre recordado. Carvoeiro nunca será a mesma. (Rest in peace my friend, You'll be always remembered. Carvoeiro will never be the same)

How very, very sad. Antonio was a real character and made every visit to Carvoeiro a more memorable experience. God bless him and any family he may have. Joao, that was a beautiful tribute. I haven't seen you playing around Carvoeiro for a couple of years. Used to really enjoy our nights in Round Up and especially La Bamba. May he rest in peace, he gave a lot of pleasure to a lot of people and enriched our lives. Terry & lois

I don't live in Portugal anymore. I'm really upset because I couldn't go to António's funeral yesterday (Saturday). I'm too faraway. I spoke with him about 2 and a half weeks ago and he was in good mood and feeling better. we were telling jokes as we normally did. He did sound much better than a couple weeks before.. I never thought after the conversation we had, that it would be the last time I'd speak with António.. :(

When we arrived in CVO last Sunday we went to Havana Bar for cocktails, on way to Chef Antonio. Walking past the bars/restaurants opposite Round Up i said to my wife that Antonio wasn't there having a drink as he normally did before going to work in Round Up. He always greeted us with a wonderful smile and would give my wife a hug and a kiss.
So sad when we went in Round Up last Sunday to hear he was gravely ill and then on Thursday evening we were told he'd passed away that day.
Always made us feel so welcome - will be sadly missed.
RIP Antonio
