we need to buy a few new things for our villa, cups, plates, cutlery etc., and a few rugs; the shops we used to go to are either shut down or burned down
anybody got any good suggestions?

The Chinese shop next to ALDI at Alcantarilha is worth a look. Also, just before you get to it there's an industrial estate on the same side of the road. One of the first shops is called Bricolage (or similar) and it is a lovely place. Lots of goodies at a reasonable price and the staff are lovely.

At the other end of the block to the Chinese shop there's another "bits and bobs" shop. Can't remember what's it called, it's next to the shoe shop.

There is a very good crockery and cutlery shop in Lagos. I cant remember what its called, but as you approach the main square from the sea front, its on your right, and always has sale signs on the windows.

The crockery we buy from there is a brand called Costa Verde, and is used by several local restaurants.

Try Casa in Portimao or Guia Shopping. All of our crockery came from there and they usually have one range on offer.

That's probably the one I was thinking of. Does it have the toys and stuff directly in front as you go through the doors?

There is a large Chinese shop at Vale Paraiso. Bigger than the one at Alcantarilha and has a huge range.

I have bought several things in there and obviously not top quality, but no problems with them. If you want to colour co-ordinate they are great as the kitchen section is arranged in colours. They have a wide range of goods. Algarve Shopping has Casa, Conforama, Gato Preto etc and a large Continente with a good selection of household items. Also, the new Aqua in Portimoa has Primark and across the road is BHS.
I miss the old Recomar in Portimoa - we bought most of our stuff from there when we bought our place.

That closing down sale, in Lagos, has been on for the last 3 years, to my knowledge!!

Primark at Aqua in Portimao has a small home department, great for bedding and towels etc.
Also its worth noting that many of the UK stores, John Lewis, Next, BHS etc, deliver now to Portugal for quite reasonable delivery costs.
(not furniture) I know John Lewis is about £7.50
A overnight trip to Seville or Lisbon is good to do, tying into a trip to IKEA

When we bought two singles, a double and bedside cabinets, it worked out cheaper buying on line and getting them shipped out.

Conforama sell reasonable beds.

As for the other stuff Matalan sell some nice 'Made in Portugal' crockery

Agree with Bruce, we have bought an assortment of kithen wear from this shop, very good.
