tiger prawns ?

Post by alf1956 »

can anybody reccomend a restaraunt that does nice tiger prawns that dont cost you an arm&a leg?we used to go to poc partido but he has closed&his tiger prawns were very nice&excellent value at 18 euros,we have also tried jota lita a few times&they were very nice&a similar price but we want to try somewhere different.we have also been to la bella vita lots of times&try to go at least once when we are here which is 1st class but a bit pricey in these times of economic turmoil

I hate to give this one away but.... Velho Nuvo, in Ferragudo does fantastic prawns at a very reasonable price.
Its not on the main square, but over the road in an alley to the left of the bank on the corner.
Great Portuguese restaurant.

What is the local definition of a " Tiger Prawn " is it the large ones which when raw have a black stripe imported from the far east or is it the mini lobster ( dublin Bay prawns ) from the cold waters of the N atlantic. ?
We see it on menus and are not sure what is being offered ?

Surely the answer is that tigers have stripes and dublin bay prawns do not

I think Lobster & a lot of the jumbo prawns are overrated in that they are tasteless & require a cheesy or garlic or seafood sauce to get them going :(
mid size prawns a better & tastier, enhanced with a little squeeze of lemon :)
my faves are the little brown shrimps, eaten whole or hold head & tail & bite the middle out, a great unique taste & fab with a glass of crisp white or a pint of real ale :)

Dublin bay prawn aka langoustine aka scampi; although tasty are no real value for what you pay for them and are fiddly to get at although a mate once showed me a good trick; hold them along the body & squeeze, this 'cracks' the underside & done 2 or 3 times along the shell you can pull the meat straight out from the throat

we've found crayfish tails as well recently, a delicious taste to them,

that's it, I'm off down the fish stall, laters :D

Found some " Tigre " prawns in the deep frozen section at Continente and at 45euros/kg they can stay there.
Obviously imported from some far off distant place.
Agree that the small brown shrimp has far more taste than most alternatives on the market today.
There is a series on BBC2 about British foods which have declined and the brown shrimp is one of them.
Much of todays catch ends up in Holland, Blegium or Sweden via Morocco where it is sent for processing.
A far cry from the days when we would buy a bag of shrimps to eat on the way home from school.

Brown shrimps either potted or boiled are the gift of the god's, there's a place on the Wirral called Parkgate and the shrimps caught there are the finest I've ever tasted, brown bread and loads of butter, luverly jubbely! (Clue for the entrance of Jeremy.) :D

Still available just up the coast at Southport:
