New Continente in Portimao

Post by DaveK »

Drove past the old Leclerc in Portimao yesterday and see that Continente have taken the unit. Looks not too far off opening. Anyone know when? Bet Intermarche are not too pleased!

Not Parchal, the other one heading out through Boavista in the direction of Alvor. A few hundred meters past this and Intermarche turn right, left at the water tower and past the back of the old retail park and you will see the total devastation. Still just a mass of twisted rusting metal. No sign of site clearance yet and what is the betting that it will still be the same next year at this time. Without the draw of footfall to Continente I am begining to doubt that Portimao retail park will ever rise from the ashes.

Doesn't look like the Portimao Retail Park has been touched to me. The buildings are all still standing with the fire/smoke damage. Rather odd to me as I am sure it must have been insured!

I was reliably informed that the reason nothing has been touched is that there is wrangling over the insurance, could take a while.........

The site of the Continente on the retail park has been cleared but the rest remain untouched. It seems various insurance companies throughout the world are involved being many of the stores burnt were multinational and had various international insurance companies involved.

Perhaps Continente being part of a Portugese group managed to sort theirs out fairly quickly and that is why they have a new store opening.
Decathalon have also reopened this week on a new site along the river in Portimao.

The unconfirmed story I heard was that there is a major wrangle over insurance, because the firebreak walls in the roof between the individual units were never installed by the sites owners. Thus allowing the fire to "crown" the way it did.
Therefore some of the insurances may be invalidated.
