Portuguese National Anthem

Post by e-richard »

Just in case you'd ever wondered, here is the Portuguese National Anthem with English subtitles.
Its all pretty aggressive stuff

Most National Anthems are so outdated and ridiculous now they should be changed.

For example, the Dutch National anthem is 16 verses long and contains these words
To the king of Spain I've granted
A lifelong loyalty.
Complete nonsense - we should take note of Australia and Scotland and get a new one.

Perhaps England could have one - "Oh England my England, how fair are we - once we were great, now we are twee"

Totally Agree HR. Abolished altogether would be even better.

I love the National Anthem of the UK. We are changing everything else so for me it's a little bit of patriotism that is still there.

I understand that they are now considering a Muslim,Urdu, Polish,Romanian,Pakistani, national anthem for England.
Everything else British has been subverted in our politically correct falling over backwards desire to make the UK all inclusive at the cost of British tradition and culture.

How many Brits actually know all the words not just the first verse.
Even though we had to sing it at least once week at school assemblies etc etc..

My favourite is Jerusalem ( Blakes lyrics ) from what I can remember its pretty non denominational and makes no reference to old wars and enemies.

Here's your chance to learn EMM

God save our gracious Queen
Long live our noble Queen
God save the Queen
Send her victorious
Happy and glorious
Long to reign over us
God save the Queen

O Lord our God arise
Scatter her enemies
And make them fall
Confound their politics
Frustrate their knavish tricks
On Thee our hopes we fix
God save us all

Thy choicest gifts in store
On her be pleased to pour
Long may she reign
May she defend our laws
And ever give us cause
To sing with heart and voice
God save the Queen

Not in this land alone
But be God's mercies known
From shore to shore
Lord make the nations see
That men should brothers be
And form one family
The wide world over

From every latent foe
From the assassins blow
God save the Queen
O'er her thine arm extend
For Britain's sake defend
Our mother, prince, and friend
God save the Queen

Pennill Cyntaf - First stanza)
Mae hen wlad fy nhadau yn annwyl i mi,
Gwlad beirdd a chantorion, enwogion o fri;
Ei gwrol ryfelwyr, gwladgarwyr tra mad,
Dros ryddid collasant eu gwaed.
(Cytgan - Chorus)
Gwlad, gwlad, pleidiol wyf i'm gwlad.
Tra môr yn fur i'r bur hoff bau,
O bydded i'r hen iaith barhau.
(Ail Bennill - Second stanza)
Hen Gymru fynyddig, paradwys y bardd,
Pob dyffryn, pob clogwyn, i'm golwg sydd hardd;
Trwy deimlad gwladgarol, mor swynol yw si
Ei nentydd, afonydd, i mi.
(Cytgan - Chorus)
(Trydydd Pennill - Third stanza)
Os treisiodd y gelyn fy ngwlad tan ei droed,
Mae hen iaith y Cymry mor fyw ag erioed,
Ni luddiwyd yr awen gan erchyll law brad,
Na thelyn berseiniol fy ngwlad.
(Cytgan - Chorus)
Translations[edit]
The following is a fairly free translation in verse.
The land of my fathers is dear unto me,
Old land where the minstrels are honoured and free:
Its warring defenders, so gallant and brave,
For freedom their life's blood they gave
Land!, Land!, True I am to my land!
While seas secure,
this land so pure,
o may our old language endure.
O land of the mountains, the bard's paradise,
Whose precipice, valleys lone as the skies,
Green murmuring forest, far echoing flood
Fire the fancy and quicken the blood
For tho' the fierce foeman has ravaged your realm,
The old speech of Wales he cannot o'erwhelm,
Our passionate poets to silence command
Or banish the harp from your strand.
A more literal translation is:
The old land of my fathers is dear to me,
Land of bards and singers, famous men of renown;
Her brave warriors, very splendid patriots,
For freedom shed their blood.
Nation [or country], Nation, I am faithful to my Nation.
While the sea [is] a wall to the pure, most loved land,
O may the old language [sc. Cymraeg] endure.
Old mountainous Wales, paradise of the bard,
Every valley, every cliff, to my look is beautiful.
Through patriotic feeling, so charming is the murmur
Of her brooks, rivers, to me.
If the enemy oppresses my land under his foot,
The old language of the Welsh is as alive as ever.
The muse is not hindered by the hideous hand of treason,
Nor [is] the melodious harp of my country..

Words to make you proud, Boyo.

It's an oldie but this was Billy Connelly's take on the 'British' national anthem.

If I've mucked up copying the link just google Billy Connelly National Anthem.

For us Scots the original verse 4 was 'interesting'!!!
