Weather Station in Carvoeiro (update)

Post by leMene »

Quite new station at Algar Seco.

Seems a very quality one, photos:
http://www.meteopt.com/forum/instrument ... -7193.html

It will soon give us it's data via website (already sending data http://meteofonteslitoral.cm-lagoa.pt/g ... emanal.php ) as the one at Sitio das Fontes http://195.245.135.113/meteofontes/graficos-semanal.php already does.

Carvoeiro has generally higher low temperatures than Sitio das Fontes (about 10 km from coast) and lower max temps.
But it has generally lower temps than other east stations (as Vilamoura http://www.wunderground.com/weatherstat ... =IFAROVIL2 )
Quantity of rain can also have sometimes quite different values.

Example from yesterday:

Sítio das Fontes:
Tmáx: 31,1ºC
Tmín: 14,0ºC

Carvoeiro:
Tmáx:25,6ºC
Tmín: 16,4ºC

How can there be a 6 degree difference in temp?

Is it just the weather stations or is carvoeiro cooler, don't see how

Sea breezes/winds. We live on south coast, uk about 300m from beach. It is often cooler in summer and warmer in winter than even a few miles in land. We rarely get snow, but few miles inland it can be a few inches deep. In fact it can be great weather in our garden where it is sheltered, but walk to the beach and it can be colder & windy, or vice versa depending on wind direction.

We've often found during the winter that it can be cold in Carvoeiro and quite pleasant at Sítio das Fontes, which is more sheltered from the wind.

IT just goes to show we never really venture out beyond Leroy Merlin and the villa doing all our chores. Where is SDF? I am guessing really close. I only walked to AS last year having never been up that road. One of these days when we can spend our retirement in CVO I am determined to do some visiting. :D

Sitio das Fontes is a pleasant spot, back of Estombar - its well signposted now. Turn left at the large island in Lagoa towards Pao da Azucar and go past the Train station, then right. It's a large source of clear spring water bubbling up from the hills and fills a large area, which the locals/schools use for swimming - nice BBQ area and a nice walk - all the way to the Arade river if you want - can get very hot there as it's in a sheltered valley. On the way back, just in Estombar on the right, there is a small local bar - Cristal is 80C, coffee 60C and a large brandy €1

There are quite often school groups there during term time. They go kayaking , bread-making and other educational stuff. There's an ampitheatre which I've never seen used.

Details of SdF on "What to Do" section of this CVO website.

I found the place whist getting lost trying to find the winery with the statues, ended up spending quite some time just wandering about, only person there apart from a maintenance person.
