Fishing Licence
Does any non resident bother to buy a sea fishing licence? I understand you are supposed to buy one but it seems its not easy to do so. I read on a website that if you do not have a Portuguese bank card you cannot get one from an ATM and you have to go to the nearest office in Olhao. Any views/advice please?

Did you ever speak to the chap in the fishing tackle shop situated on the Carvoeiro In Road? I do know that a local know who fishes on his days off, just gave a wry smile when I asked about needing a licence!

I can assure you that if the Maritime Police catch you fishing without a license in a specific area or lake without one, they will confiscate all your fishing gear.
The sea license is only for certain areas along the coast and you are only allowed two rods.
Fishing off a Cliff is also banned, irrelevant of what you see and hear.

Agree, please get a licence and only fish in desigated places.
A friend of ours last year when in Cabanas de Tavira, went fishing as he is an avid fisher, did not realise a licence was required and was stopped and cautioned by the guards.
He did not get his stuff cofiscated but they did tell him where to go and fish and where to get a licence. In fact he met up with one of the guys a few days later, fishing.

and from painful personal experience I can confirm that there are men going around in a GNR style jeep who do indeed relieve one of one's tackle.

I agree with Smudger, go and see the man who runs the tackle shop and he will get one for you from the atm in your name. I got one for a week last year and it cost me 5 euros and I bought some bits as well. I fished off the rocks in various spots and caught just an octopus!!! The best place I think is the breakwater at Ferragudo, Does anyone know what is happening with Hideaway Lakes? I've caught loadsa Carp there but it's now under new ownership....good luck

You use the British card at the ATM to get money, but not to buy the license. The extra services ATMs in Portugal provide (like paying for services and buying license, etc.) are only available with a Portuguese bank ATM card.madaboutangling wrote:Thanks sun an. Hi all,
As this is my first post I thought I'd better introduce myself, then apologise for the resurrection of an old topic....
I'm Phil, almost hit half a century , and have been coming to Carvoeiro every summer for the last five years. The father in law lends me his villa (up by the Tivoli hotel) and after as my carrer in the RAF comes to a end I'm looking to (possibly) spend more time out here.
Anyway, why did I resurrect this post?
I used to do a lot of fishing in my younger years and thought that this year I'd try some out here. Having still got a lot of gear I bought some with me and in preparation for this trip did a bit of research into getting the somewhat elusive fishing licence - it didn't seem fair strolling into the fishing shop and asking the guy for a licence, especially when I wasn't going to purchase much..
Ok, as it turns out getting a licence is not at all hard if you have transport. The simple way is to go to the DGRM (Datapescas, da Direcção-Geral de Recursos Naturais, Segurança e Serviços Marítimos - don't ask me to actually pronounce it) They have an office on the old road into Portimao (the last roundabout before you hit the bridge if you're coming from CV) at the 'Doca pesca' (Fishing Docks?)
The office is easy to find, just go through the security gate (manned but they don't stop you) and you'll see it on the left. The ladies in there are helpful and efficient, and got me sorted in less than ten minutes. Top tip is to take your passport as this will be entered on the licence, however this also does mean that when you go fishing you'll need to keep it with you for ID purposes.
The office is open from 09:00 to 12:30 and from 13:30 to 17:00 and having the correct change (€4 for Apeda - shore fishing) always helps.
That's it then, first post done, sorry if it was a long one... just thought I'd save anyone else looking for a licence some time...
Oh, and by the way, first trip to the rocks got me four nice size Bass, one of which I took home for lunch...

Hi,
Getting some good results at Algar Seco, fishing off the rocks accessed from the boardwalk. I go the the right hand side when entering from the steps, down on an area which is about a couple of metres off the sea. I will issue a word of warning here for anyone reading this as this fishing mark can get overrun by waves on high tide, I'm old enough and ugly enough to understand and take the risk.... please don't do anything to put yourself at risk.
My set up is a 8ft Sonik XTR travel rod with a Penn 2500 reel and I'm currently using the soft 'jelly' lures - from my collection the lighter coloured Sprat shaped lures seem to be giving the best results, bringing my total of Bass over three days (06:30 - 09:30 each day) to eight. The Bass like to stay close to the rocks and ambush, so beware of the many snags - in fact I watched the biggest I took follow my lure in almost directly below my feet, before taking the lure and immediately powering off into open water, putting up a heck of a fight on the way back..

Very useful thanks. I fished off Algar Seco in June but was behind the Boneca bar on a ledge about 30 feet up. I saw others fishing where you described so that must be the place. It looked as though you needed to be an antelope to reach it but obviously worthwhile! Look forward to trying next time. Have you tried any boat fishing yet?

Not to bad to get down to that area, there's steps almost all the way down, you just have to find them
Boat fishing? No is the short answer, I'm not really into it to be honest (plus the missus might Have something to say about me disappearing on a boat..)
