Travel from Carvoeiro to Lisbon

Hello there

Could anyone give me a few tips on what the best way to Lisbon is? Are there any trains going from Carvoeiro or nearby? I would like to go to Lisbon for the festial de Sao Antonio, apparently on the 12th-13th June. However, I'm not sure how to get there. Could anyone help, please?

no trains from carvoeiro as there is no station...you have to go to Tunes which is the main connection for lisbon bound trains. tunes is about 20 minutes from carvoeiro going to albufeira and then go north about 4 kilometres. the best train goes about 8 am first class is about 15 euros one way. the train takes you to this side of the river ...when you get off you must follow the crowd to the ferry which takes about 30 minutes. the ferry price is included. its a great trip on the train and on the ferry. train arrives about 11.30 am. look at their web site which is www.cp.pt

Just had a look on the website. Am a bit confused. Which linea/line is it and what is the train/ferry called? Don't want to get the wrong one.

oh dear well its got me confused too...firstly look at TIMETABLE and then go to COMBOBIOUS INTER REGIONALS the train is the one called BARREIRO (which is the name of the ferry port) to FARO ...this train stops at TUNES. the only thing which confuses me is that it says the train is at 9 ish which i dont understand..unless the timetable is for sunday or the times have been chaged as they are electrifying the line which means that soon the train will go drectly into lisbon and you will miss the ferry crossing...which is vey wonderful. going into lisbon via the ferry crossing is rather like going into venice by sea.

anyway i would suggest that you had better check when you come and buy your ticket early as it is quite popular. the first class and second class are of a very good standard with a buffet car.

if you do go make sure you get off the train fairly quickly as the ferry just goes. also worth a tip is the lisbon metro..you can buy a dayticket for about e1,50..the trains are very clean as the stations excellent

Thank you very much. So, you're confused too?! Well, I guess the best bet might be to find out some more details locally re train/ferry. 8 a.m. start sounded good to me but if they start trains directly from Tunes (?) to Lisbon, that might even be better.
Would hate to miss the ferry. If we do get to Lisbon, I'd definitely check out the Metro. 1.50 Euro per day sounds excellent!

Do you happen to know any more about this festival? Is it on all over Lisbon or only certain districts?

i dont know anything about the festival.
the metro seems to operate on the system that no one pays!!! if you buy your ticket there is an automated entry whereby you put your ticket in and it opens the barriers...the thing is that the a lot of barrirs are left open so everyone just walks on and off as they please. you will find beggars going thru the carriages...some blind etc..the stations are just below the surface and very clean. if you look down at the tracks you will be hard pressed to even find a sweet paper.

returning to the subject of the trains. there is a station at silves (well nearanyway) and at Portimao if you want to check timetables

re the lisbon metro ..their site is as follows

they have an english section which explains about fares etc and the track system which are colour coded.

try getting off at the praca de espanha..this is the one that leads directly to the el cort ingles department store..also there is a station at the colombo shopping 400 plus 66 resturants "city"

alos there is a station at the park of nations,,,which you should go to and look at the oceanarium

the closest station to the ferry port entrance to lisbon is "BAIXO CHIADO"
its about 10 minutes walk after you get off the ferry...you go past all the old trams..the next metro station after that then its ROSSIO.

try staying at the IBIS hotels about 60 euros a night breakfast is about 4
good standard and very clean

Thank you very much Martin. Appreciate all the tips. Would not risk doing a runner on the Metro though as you never know how high the fine for travelling without a ticket might be.

Does anyone else know about the Festa de Sao Antonio? Maybe I ought to start a new thread on this....

We would probably just stay in Lisbon for one night and the IBIS sounds the right price range. Maybe 50 Euros would be even better? We'd just need somewhere to sleep - breakfast is not really necessary as you could always grab something in a cafe, which might even be nicer.

Will print all these replies out before we go so that I have all the info on hand.

thanks for the warning re Ibis but we don't know how many people are definitely going to join us on our trip to Lisbon and I don't want to jump the gun. Could be just the two of us, could be four or even more. Will need to sort it face to face with the rest of the gang. We're too far apart to do it all beforehand via phone and email.

Appreciate the tip though. I'm sure we'll find somewhere to kip, even if it's last minute. Well, let's hope so.

do make sure you book..many times i have had great diffuclty in getting into lisbon hotels...you only need some confreance there and it can be tricky
