Use airport transfer company or hire cars?

Post by David B »

8 of us are coming to stay at Pestana Golf Resort in April. We will have our cases and golf clubs. We are not sure whether to hire cars or just get airport transfers to the resort. Will we need the cars once we get to the resort or will we be able to get around on foot and taxis? With all our gear it means that we will have to hire pretty big cars and it can work out expensive.

Really looking forward to our holiday as I have never been to Portugal before - sorry.

Regards

I think you'll feel a little isolated as the golf resort is a fair distance from Carvoeiro, I would suggest a minibus, perhaps combined with a transfer from the airport for surplus luggage.

Thanks for the reply Steen. One of our plans was to use taxis to get into Carvoeiro so that we could all have a couple of beers. How many miles (or kms) are we looking at from the golf resort to Carvoeiro? Have you any idea how much taxis are?

Thanks in anticipation of any help. Will buy you a beer when we come in April

We have looked at airport transfers most of them have a limit of 1 case and 1 small bag per person

Hire Cars here are very cheap now...about 10 £ a day.......Minibuses are quite expensive.......a local English guy here with a mini bus will do the run for about £40 one way...but dont think one minibus will carry 8 guys and all the stuff.......If you want his phone /contact I can find it for you...just ask...........Alternative is to hire little cars at £10 to£14 a day and ask nicely if anybody will run your gear into Carvoeiro........I'm sure for about 50 quid each way you will get offers.....(I know you will)...enjoy the golf...

Rent a minibus at 360 euro for a week, pick it up in Faro airport.
Get a transfer from Faro for surplus luggage 49 euro each way.
Total: 458 euro or 57.25 euro per head/
in £: 314.50 / 39.30

You'll need the minibus for shopping, sightseeing etc.

If nobody can drive it home in the evening, leave it, take a taxi back and the shuttle-bus down next morning to pick it up.

You can also get two smaller cars for 260 euro total, it will not give you more luggage space, but increased petrol use and require two drivers.

Or you could get a small car and an estate and do without the transfer, cost 401 euro (depends on your luggage and number of golf bags?

Or go all Taxi...

Please use our advertisers, they are all licensed professionals.

I think I have covered the possibilities.

Hi David - assuming it will be the usual 'boys away' golfing trip, I would recommend booking some kind of taxi from the airport and arrange to have two small cars delivered to your villa the next day - I doubt anyone will want to be the designated driver and not drink before and during the flight and the route to Carvoeiro even after 1 beer is really not to be recommended!

In our experience it is also better to have two cars for a large group because it means that you don't always have to go to the same place together, and it makes it much easier to nip out to the shops (I wouldn't fancy trying to park a minibus in the town)

Also, with two cars you will be able to nominate 4 drivers, rather than just two with a minibus.

A taxi into town will cost you 8 Euros for 4/5 people from Pestana, or you could always do two trips in one small car (about 8 mins each way), and then take the other car to collect it in the morning.

Also, you probably know that you actually have to drive to the Pinta course (about 5 minutes from check in at Gramacho) so ought to bear this in mind with your travel arrangements.

Hope this is of some help

Thanks to everybody for taking the time to reply to my post. I will print everything out and have a discussion with the other people on the trip.

If you see 8 guys at the end of April in one of your bars then come and ask for me. I'll buy you a beer (or two).

Regards
